Ripening berries are a sure sign that autumn is on its way. Winterberry Holly, Virginia Creeper, and Black Chokeberry are still green but are enlarging by the day and will be ready to be consumed by migrating birds in a few weeks. #birds #nativeplants

A lot has changed in 5 years, the year I started gardening with #nativeplants. The birch tree out front went from an 18” tall sapling to a 25’ tree in no time. The lawn is almost gone, only a strip that I use for a pathway remains.
Cardinal Flower, Allegheny Monkeyflower, Boneset, and Jewelweed all in bloom in a marsh I’ve been restoring along the Charles River. After the peak of today’s heat, I have some purple loosestrife to pull before it goes to seed, but there isn’t much left after repeated pulling for 4 seasons.
Blue lobelia popped today. The cardinal flowers are in peak bloom. One of my favorite #nativeplants duos
Sounds of late summer. The katydids are so loud they are drowning out the crickets.
In one of the biggest local housing votes of the year, Waltham's City Council overrode the mayor's veto of the Bay Colony redevelopment. The project would replace aging office space with a new mixed-use neighborhood and up to 1,200 homes. www.bostonglobe.com/2026/08/04/b...

A hummingbird! Foraging on Aster and Cardinal Flower. #nativeplants
Mid summer came quick this year. Enjoying every moment of it while I can before the inevitable happens🍁 #nativeplants
This is a disgusting thing to publish in the wake of Louisa Gag's death. Yes, safety education is important for bicyclists. But Louisa is dead because of unsafe infrastructure and because of dangerous blind spots on trucks. Why does this piece not even mention steps the trucking industry could take?
The preventable blind spot trap killing Boston’s cyclists - The Boston Globe
Large trucks turning right can sweep cyclists into their rear wheels in an instant. Understanding this deadly dynamic could save lives.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything from the backyard, so here’s a video of a Gray Catbird taking a quick bath #birds
Strong wind gusts and frequent lightning occurred during the thunderstorm that just moved through. Waltham, MA @wx1box.bsky.social
I’ve finally hit the point where there are more violets than grass in the lawn. 8 years of no pesticides or fertilizer will do that. #nativeplants
A Northern Parula is singing high in the trees. This is a new species for my backyard list. #birds
The chimney swifts are back for the season. This dove decided to be the main character however. #birds
The mourning doves had one fledgling and have already began building on top of their old nest in preparation for another egg. This little one is now mostly independent from its parents
@mayorwu.boston.gov @wutrain.bsky.social @streets.boston.gov There used to be flexposts turning from Arlington St to the bike lane beside the Public Garden. This is what happens when they're gone. A truck driver drove into the bike lane, and two drivers blindly followed. Please fix this.
I’m a little jealous of this Serviceberry in my neighborhood, which is in peak bloom. It has to be close to 30 years old. #nativeplants
