I'm in Wilford (Notts) this morning. The grooves on the porch door & chancel arch are said to be made by archers sharpening arrows. Instead, the marks are likely the results of parishioners harvesting stonedust to use in curative potions. More info: triskeleheritage.com/mediaeval-my...

We've just moved my Dad into his new flat. During this we discovered that his new neighbour is Fox Mulder.

I took precisely one photograph at Bosworth Medieval Festival yesterday because I was either speaking or looking after Tiny Son. Whilst doing the latter, I spotted what may just be a cruck blade reused as a tie beam (the horizontal with the slightly curved left hand end).

Nice find during a building survey on the North Yorkshire Moors: an intact piggery swill chute (for pouring liquid feed into the stye). The trough has been removed but a cobbled floor surface remains. The humble and the everyday is still significant in buildings archaeology.

A failure of mid-20thC planning was the widespread demolition of ancient buildings, even in places like York. Black Swan on Coney St dated to 17thC & 1790. Minimal record made. I look at such cases in The Buildings Archaeologist, out 8 Oct: triskeleheritage.triskelepublishing.com/the-building...

I am amused that the birthplace claim by the Guy Fawkes Inn at York is considered so flimsy that the blue plaque is a window sticker 😁 This property was built 1700-07, a century after Fawkes' death. Instead, his parents probably lived round the corner on Stonegate.
