Saw my first WNBA game last night. Great game. And, as an elder GenX, it was a revelation to hear a stadium of people going wild for women playing ball. The energy was outstanding. Little boys totally entranced and cheering. It was thrilling. We've come a long way.

Youth ebike crashes fall 28%. Marin prohibits kids under 16 from Class II bikes, but this was primarily accomplished by parent education and cracking down on illegal e-motos. www.marinij.com/2026/08/15/m...
Marin reports decline in youth e-bike crashes
Despite the downward trend, county officials say safety on the vehicles remains a public health priority.

I am now seriously questioning whether I will shop at Nordstrom's again. Not ony are they using a terrible AI customer service, but they've outsourced their delivery to Tforce, which is a terrible carrier. For the last 3 days, they've failed to deliver due to "no access".
Nordstrom was a company that built its brand on outstanding customer service. Boy, am I disappointed to be getting obvious made up AI customer service that just gave me the number to staples for an undelivered package.

Grads living at home post grad. is a reduction in household formation = a reduction in household supply, suggesting that rents would be increasing even faster, if kids could move out on their own. Funny, the authors quickly credit a decrease in the "taste for independence" rather than rents.
More and more college grads are moving home after graduation. It reflects the combination of a lousy job market, high rent and the easing of a social stigma www.nytimes.com/2026/08/02/b...

Marin Voice: Greenbrae would benefit from more affordable housing
If Greenbrae can add affordable housing units within its borders, I think it would make so many people’s lives much easier.

Crane in San Rafael- direct result of state housing laws.
Huge kudos and a huge win for Marin! CLAM just held a housewarming for 12 tiny homes in Pt. Reyes Station. This was part of a larger, herculean effort to create housing in West Marin for the families displaced in when the ranches in were shut down. This is the effort we need!
Now we have a have a guy invoking the housing shortage as a reason to illegally deny a building permt
It's been a long time since I've heard a resident pull out property values as a reason to stop a project, but the last commenter pulled out the over $2B in property values in Belvedere. The next says "I don't think this is NIMBY, but if you took a vote 95% of neighbors would oppose it."
Belvedere holding a town hall for the purposes of issuing a demolition permit for the mallard point housing project.
Tip: if your large dog randomly rushes a bystander, jumps on them and barks aggressively, don't defend your dog's behavior & claim he doesn't do what he just did. Your bystander is still just as terrified and now feels like a weird dog-antagonizing loser.
We are off to hike to our GG Bridge viewing spot to see hopefully see the fireworks. With the fog poring in- it's not looking promising.
Marinwood, a 125-unit, 100% affordable project in Marin, was permitted today and construction starts immediately. This is the largest affordable housing development in Marin in decades (you could say this century). Thanks Yimby for the laws that made this possible. callmarinhome.org/at-project/m...

One thing I hate about impact fees & their nexus studies is that it reinforces the idea that new residents are a burden. San Rafael needs new residents to support its business, prevent the closing of schools and update property tax basis.
Amazing model of New York City by Joe Maken. I had fun comparing his model to population density maps- it turns out, population density is not tightly correlated with the built environment.
While San Francisco looks super dense compared to Marin, it's really not dense at all. San Francisco is far less dense than New York - and less dense than 4/5 boroughs.
New California income levels for affordable housing just came up. Sadly, but not suprisingly, AMI continues to rise. In Marin, a single person is now low income at $117,700. Marin, SF, San Mateo all have AMIs for a family of 4 at $200,000. Santa Clara at $205,000. www.hcd.ca.gov/sites/defaul...
No suprise here - the prize for lowest production of any in-demand area is San Rafael. Just 33 units permitted last year - all ADUs. San Rafael one of the best places to live in California, if it just built housing. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
Everyone loves the houseboats because they are charming and quirky. Walking down the dock, you experience 100 different personalities. Some boats are cute, some beautiful, and some are not. But altogether, It's charming and interesting. Design review would have made it boring.
This is the problem with all design regulation. Design is an act of expression. It's speech, and speech is protected in the US, full stop.
Just re-upping this. We have verification in place. There is something going on.
We are getting a slow, but steady slew of subscriptions to our newsletter from people unlikely interested in our content. (We do Marin housing - we are getting subscriptions from Wisconsin, Utah, Czech Republic). They click on every email we send. Is this some weird AI content harvesting effort?
Housing at UCSB. $1,100 for a third of a bedroom for a 3 bedroom flat that housese 11 students total. The bedroom does not have a closet. Just a hanging clothes rod, and a 2 drawer dresser for each student. This flat is in a duplex that houses 20 students total. Each flat is 1,500-1,600 sq ft.
I can't stop thinking about the fact that 25% of Marin home transfers are via inheritance, and this rate is growing. Due to Prop 13, property taxes are tied to purchase price, heirs inherit the low tax base. This is a problem.

I have a new visualization I'm testing this week. The top shows the income distribution of Marin households. The bottom shows the distribution of rents and home prices. There is no housing available for households with less than $65,000 in income. We have a shortage of $5k/month apartments.
Another tragedy on the roads of Marin, with one teen killed and four more hurt in a solo crash. But sure, let's spend an entirely legislative session in Sacramento arguing about e-bikes, shall we? www.marinij.com/2026/04/11/t...

Groups of cops patrolling Isla Vista at 9:00am. The USCB Deltopia party was cancelled, and presumably this is to ensure it doesn't happen. Don't love groups of cops patrolling student areas, especially when nothing is happening.

A final thought: the most important, efficacious, & sizeable faction on the left is plain old normie Dems, "wine moms," "resistance libs," whatever condescending term you prefer. They're the ones doing the actual work. But they are largely ignored by media, because they're organized & led by women.
25% of Marin home transfer are through inheritance. Daryl Fairweather, chief economist at Redfin calls this a caste system. Communities that build more have lower rates of inheritance. www.sfchronicle.com/realestate/a...
How common is home inheritance in California? These areas see the highest rates
High housing prices and low inventory mean that for many Californians, the surest way to get a home is to hope to inherit one.
