Senate Judiciary Democrats 🇺🇸

Defending freedoms. Advancing equality. Ensuring justice for all. News from the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats, led by Ranking Member @durbin.senate.gov.

Sen. DURBIN: This isn’t Democrats vs. Republicans. This is rule of law vs. lawlessness. The Attorney General is the people’s lawyer. Todd Blanche continues to act as Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, treating the Justice Department like a law firm serving one client—the President.

Dilley ICE detention facility is infamous for its abhorrent treatment of families. Medical neglect. Solitary confinement. Undrinkable water. Abject cruelty. Guards are even taunting hungry kids by eating candy and pizza in front of them. And they’re hiding it from Congress.

Sen. BOOKER: Do you have any idea why ICE targeted you? Former ICE detainee: I don’t. They’re going for everybody, no matter what age. Booker: Si, la Verdad. Quiero dar gracias a usted. Tu tiene increíble coraje y tu es una persona muy impresionante. Detainee: Gracias.

Sen. SMITH: A Minnesotan has been held in detention since December. She’s here legally and literally wasting away, but unable to get the medical care or legal advice they need. Does this sound familiar? Medical expert: It’s not uncommon. Former official: And it’s exacerbated.

Medical expert: For over two decades, I’ve been evaluating health care in immigration detention. I’ve sat with women and men after they were deported. Throughout, I’ve had deep concerns about the quality of medical care, but I’ve never been more alarmed than I am right now.

Sen. DURBIN: 50+ people have died in immigration detention under Trump. That’s more than double the full previous Administration. How’s this even possible? ICE is clearly not using resources to provide adequate medical care or improve conditions—so what are tax dollars going to?
