Happy Publication Day for Rachel Phan’s new book THAT ASIAN GIRL IS A PROBLEM!!! Because I got my copy early at Edmonton’s LitFest 10 days ago (and then promptly devoured the book), MY REVIEW IS READY! *drumroll* 2 thumbs up! 5 out of 5 stars! All the stars! Hooray! WHAT A READ!

3 months to pub date! This “period” is like hitting adolescence in a book’s life (see what I did there? someone please laugh). The book is trying to find its potential friends, awkward about trying to introduce itself, shunned by some, embraced by others, and ultimately feeling very self-conscious.

Have you ever felt self-conscious about physical features that you attribute to your ethnicity or race? From my forthcoming book MUTED COLOURS: “Body hair was a huge deal for me growing up. People told me, “You have hairy arms,” or “You have a hairy upper lip, you have a moustache.”

I spied 2 of my favourite Asian-authored books in the same cute shop in Calgary, both of which I quote in my forthcoming book MUTED COLOURS! I resonated so much with both these books because they defined that very particular experience of unbelonging… Some key quotes I included: #mutedcoloursbook

My latest Substack post is about my experience as a hypervisible minority during a writing conference. It is a disconcerting experience to realize you are the one that doesn’t automatically belong in a group solely because of your physical appearance.

EEEEEEK! I’m excited to announce that you will very soon be able to apply to receive a Digital Advance Review Copy of MUTED COLOURS! Not only that, but there will be a Street Team Challenge that anyone can participate in to earn entries for the PRIZE DRAW!

Can you be racist against your own race? When this question first popped into my head, I thought I was being ridiculous. Obviously I couldn’t dislike my own race. That would mean I disliked myself. And I liked myself just fine. Didn’t I? I actually googled this question at some point, which led to-

Do you experience light-skin privilege? Have people in your cultural or racial community made comments about your skin tone? If you’re lucky enough to experience light-skin privilege, did that afford you some protection from discrimination? Note: light-skin privilege is a result of COLOURISM.

I got to see Josh Johnson live in #YEG and the show was SO GOOD. His whole spiel about Elon Musk’s temper tantrum about The Odyssey featuring Black people really got me thinking. Who is taking up space in my brain? What is my “default” imaginary character? ARE THERE ONLY WHITE PEOPLE IN MY HEAD?

It’s World Autism Acceptance Day (and month)! I see so many autistic people from young children, teens and young adults, and grown-ass adults, who deal with so much trauma associated with the pain of never being accepted. Of never being allowed to be themselves. 1/3

I finally watched Heated Rivalry after reading the first 3 books by Rachel Reid (It was my reward for finishing my book edits because I knew I would binge watch) - WOW. It’s rare that I think a screen adaptation is as good as a book (I mean, I’m kinda biased as an author…) but they really nailed it.
