ProPublica spoke to dozens of people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words. ➡️ This is what they wrote:

Handwritten notecard. Prompt at the top asks: What object was most devastating for you to lose, and how have you been coping? Answer below: Dentures. Were thrown away and coping isn't somthing I can do. It’s made me feel ugly, unworthy, can’t go get a job with no teeth. So how can get off the streets until another pair can be made?

. . . plus arrest and jail time if we don't comply. This is our front yard. I took these today. I have not cut any of it since the inspector last visited on Aug. 31. This, folks, is a yard so unkempt and aesthetically offensive that we must now account for our failings in court. Stay tuned!

Homelessness in Nashville has increased by 20% since 2022 when Metro started investing millions to get rid of encampments. And Metro's Office of Homeless Services puts out a press release that basically says, "We suck. But we suck less than Denver and Charlotte combined, so that's a win!"

Nashville is failing on homelessness! Data is unreliable and useless. Millions of $s are wasted. The system's processes have collapsed. Services are reactive to appease politicians. Trust is completely eroded. Homeless #s increase. When can we expect a change in Metro leadership & rebuild trust?

It's time that OHS and Metro are held accountable. Especially considering that the Point In Time Count has increased again this year. Nashville's homeless response system is not working to reduce homelessness. We need a new direction.
