A fascinating look at how we got here, where the water runs, and how climate change is forcing us to reckon with that history. "Canada’s three largest cities have something in common — they’re not just built along bodies of water, they’re built over them." newsinteractives.cbc.ca/features/202...
Discover where ancient rivers flow under Canadian cities | CBC News
Ancient rivers once nourished and protected the lands where we built our biggest cities. Now, they’re buried underground. Is it finally time to let them see daylight?

I wrote a short piece for the @waterstones.bsky.social blog about how books can change lives. In our case, Giorgos Catsadorakis' Prespa: A Story for Man & Nature led us to a mountain village in Greece. What other books have changed lives? @eandtbooks.bsky.social www.waterstones.com/blog/julian-...

Mona Khalil, Lebanon’s most well-known sea turtle conservationist, died of her wounds today after being injured by an Israeli strike I feel sick
Mona Khalil spent over 20 years protecting sea turtles on Mansouri Beach. After she was injured in an Israeli attack, activists continued her initiative at Rmeileh Beach, where they protected the first loggerhead nest of 73 eggs on Thursday. youtu.be/fbBKzK4JNRc

“Slow the flow, get the habitat right and the species will come." An inspiring story of action and restoration when so much river news from the UK is grim. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
The English community that brought its river back from the brink: ‘If we can get it right here, we can do it everywhere’
For 150 years, the Mease had been altered by human hands, which destroyed habitats. But in 2013, a restoration project began – and now its wetlands are abuzz with wildlife

The five years I spent at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada were amongst the most transformative of my life, so it's a particular honour to be so generously profiled for the university's alumni magazine. Many thanks to Dan Rubinstein for writing it up so beautifully. carleton.ca/news/story/j...

The devastating reality of what's going on right now in Albania's Vjosa Delta and Narta Lagoon, one of Europe's last intact deltas systems and absolutely crucial for migratory and resident wildlife.
Have just been on site, with @birdlifeeurope.bsky.social Partners from across Europe, in Albania's Vjosa delta-Narta lagoon "protected" area. It is being devastated as we speak by the construction of an airport and a massive luxury tourism complex promoted by Jared Kushner.
After their long migratory journey from southern Africa, great white pelicans are back in Prespa again, crossing the mountains of this ancient lakes basin shared by Greece, Albania and North Macedonia. So beautiful to see so many of them flying through the cold silver light.
We are so pleased to share that #Lifelines by @julianhoffman.bsky.social has been longlisted for the RSL Ondaatje Prize! Congratulations to Julian and the other longlisted authors! 🎉
On #earthday, an image I took last week of the Vikos Gorge in northwestern Greece. Sculpted over millions of years by the Voidomatis River, the chamois I startled flowed like a river too, rippling across scree with electric energy: a current, a course, a torrent. So at home in the skyrise heights.
The spirit of place has always been my great fascination as a writer so it's an especial honour to see LIFELINES longlisted for the Ondaatje Prize, which celebrates place in all its countless, extraordinary and vital forms. Immense congratulations to all - honoured to be in such incredible company!
Deeply honoured to be in such amazing company on the Anglo-Hellenic League Runciman Award shortlist! Given annually for a book in English inspired by Greek culture and history, this is the 40th anniversary of the prize @anglohellenic.bsky.social www.anglohellenicleague.org/news/1q3q33h...
