We should be just as worried about the harm to native bees. "...studies have established that acetamiprid, a neonicotinoid with powerful neurotoxic effects, can poison bees, affecting their foraging capacity and memory. A 2024 study suggested flupyradifurone could be lethal to some honeybees."

My talk at @scbeurope.bsky.social Only 10-15% of the EU's cattle herd is needed to graze every biodiversity-rich field there is. Most cattle never set hoof on pasture. They're fed grain, packed onto fertilized monocultures. The solution isn't more grazing. It's fewer animals, better raised.

Offsetting is widely promoted but poorly founded in ecology Our modelling study shows: effective offsetting requires restored areas larger than those impacted & protection over long timescales high habitat conversion rates reduce offsetting success conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Unlike many of other butterflies, painted ladies cannot survive Swedish winters. They have to migrated here from farther south every year. The large migration this year may be linked to weather conditions in North Africa, such as high spring rainfall this year that boosted breeding success.

Have you noticed many butterflies lately? Perhaps you've even spotted a painted lady (Vanessa cardui; tistelfjäril)? This year looks like it could become one of the rare years when painted ladies migrate to Sweden in exceptionally high numbers. Keep an eye out—you might be lucky enough to see one!
