All things video games | Final Fantasy | Persona | Story of Seasons / Harvest Moon | Stardew Valley | Donkey Kong | Mega Man | PlayStation | Nintendo Currently playing - The Blood of Dawnwalker

I’ve softened a good bit on The Blood of Dawnwalker now that I’m nearing its endgame. Once you get past the initial learning curve, combat feels trivial regardless of what difficulty mode you play on. Abilities quickly become so overpowered. 🧵

Really enjoying The Blood of Dawnwalker so far! Feels a lot like The Witcher 3, but a bit more modernized and a cooler world and aesthetic (imo). It’s a bit janky and I think the open world design is detrimental at times. But it’s very good.

Big Walk ✅ Fantastic implementation of proximity chat ✅ Intuitive puzzle design ✅ One of the greatest ending sequences in video game history ✅ Even getting lost is fun ✅ There’s a certain magic feeling to its simplicity ❌ Some post-game puzzles are battles of attrition rather than fun 9.5 / 10

Metal Gear Solid There are so many cool and unique ideas in this game. And considering it released in 1998, it’s truly awe-inspiring. The voice work and cinematography, in particular are astonishing for the time. Along with its mature, thoughtful narrative. 🧵

NFL Blitz 2000 Arcadey fun, but a bit lacking in overall content & depth. There’s a quick play, tournament, and season mode. I finished a full season and won the Super Bowl. All I got for it was a congratulations screen, which is fine. 🧵

Super Smash Bros. A fantastic start to the greatest fighting game series out there. The blend of platforming and technical fighting gameplay works phenomenally. And the addition of items adds a lot of welcome chaos to the mix. 🧵

WWF Attitude The first wrestling game I’ve played for this. I didn’t like it much. The career mode doesn’t have much to it. Your placed into random matches against the next wrestler higher than you on the power rankings. And you continue doing this until you’ve reach the top spot in 3 leagues. 🧵

Ken Griffey Jr.’s Slugfest Never played this one before, but it’s a legitimately great baseball game. Controls feel good and punchy. It has more depth than you’d expect in its season mode and mechanics. The music is solid. Not really many complaints with it, outside of some dodgy AI. 🧵

Tetrisphere Not a fan. Despite having Tetris in the title, it’s nothing like Tetris at all. It’s instead this weird match 3 game where you’re trying to make layer after layer disappear to reveal an image or creature. Which then moves you onto the next level. 🧵

Chameleon Twist A short, but sweet time. The level design is pretty solid and I think the game mechanics and the way they are introduced is clever. The music and aesthetic are just good, cheerful silliness. 🧵

Beetle Adventure Racing! What a hidden gem. Such an enjoyable arcade racer with some of the most elaborate and thoughtful course design I’ve experienced in the genre. With only a couple of shortcomings holding it back from true greatness. 🧵

Bass Hunter 64 This shit sucks ass. As a kid, it was a running gag or I guess known fact between my brothers and I that Bass Hunter 64 was the worst game we owned. And playing it as an adult has further justified that feeling we had as children. 🧵

NBA Hangtime A solid port of an arcade classic. NBA Hangtime lacks quite a bit in game modes and general content. But the arcadey and cartoonish basketball gameplay is engaging and fun. Even with the obvious CPU rubber banding that exists. 🧵

Pokémon Snap Such a cool idea for a Pokémon game. I absolutely love getting to actually see the Pokémon exist and interact within their natural habitats. It’s what I’ve always wanted from Pokémon since I was a kid, and we really only ever get it with the Snap series. 🧵

Sin and Punishment A fever dream of a game. Idk wtf was happening at any point in the story. But I also didn’t really care because the vibe, the set pieces, and the core gameplay were so good. Still, it definitely could’ve *benefited* from a story with some sort of context for comprehension. 🧵

Forsaken 64 OST slaps so fucking hard. There’s a new banger for every stage. The 6-directional, space bike controls took a moment to adjust to, but surprisingly not too long and it ultimately enabled the gameplay to feel unique, while still enjoyable.

Now at Tournament 8. Not having a good time. 😭 Also started up NBA Hangtime on the side and that game *is* a good time. Going for Grand Champion title to “beat” that one, which involves beating all 29 teams in the game. I’m about halfway through with 14 beaten.

The whole ‘PlayStation ending physical games’ debacle has really just opened my eyes to how many people just aren’t ’in the know’ at all when it comes to games news or the industry. Its been generally understood for like, 3 years now that this future was coming. People are acting like it’s a shock.
