It’s my first time reading The Hobbit — almost embarrassing. It’s our latest “shared reading” book. I read much fantasy as a teen but as an adult it’s been mostly non fiction and depressing stuff. Having a lot of fun reading this with the kids!

Taken a many train in my life but first time I’m on an (operational) train in Nova Scotia. Yay! Nice comfy and spacious seats.

Initial red currant haul as I fight the wave of little fingers (kids) consuming them as they arrive. Thankfully there are many. There is a joy I get in picking these off the bush so inefficiently while the evening winds down. Slow time. 🌅

#BikeHfx One of my summer goals is to teach my kids that they can bike to a swimming hole. Chocolate Lake is our obvious choice due to proximity but … any tips on how to deal with the Herring Cove portion? Where to cross/ride/any secret tunnels I’m unaware of?

Went for a bike ride. It's nice out there. #hfxws (expect for when we had to bike alongside the line of car traffic on Romans Ave. That was mucky)

I learned today that this is a Wolf's Milk slime mold. We observed it closely, popped them, and the vibrant colour was a colour I've never seen before. I bet someone's tried to create a paint colour from it! Found in Hemlock Ravine, among many other mushrooms (and mosquitoes) today

For those in #BikeHfx curious about the multi use path adjacent to Commons skate park — is fully blocked off at the moment, no reasonable or marked detour yet. So many signs!

Had a great #KidicalMassHfx ride. I'm pretty pleased that we can bike to the North End, downtown, and back in majority protected infra or quiet streets (latter doing some heavy lifting). On a Sunday morning, is good. 5yo getting used to her new wheels, the follow-me tandem really helped us today!

We visit Hope for Wildlife a few times a year. It's always a beautiful day with some nice stops at the ocean / local shops along the way. Today we were lucky to chat with Hope herself, realized the scale of this operation. 653 patients in care at this moment, many staying for 6+ months. Incredible!

Regularly reminding my kids we have a creek near our house so when they’re older they can bike here themselves and do the things youth do (throw rocks!)

Much of the bike lane discourse ignores the need for (both independent and not) child mobility. Our optometrist appointment today is a much safer and easier bike ride today thanks to councillors like @lecwhite.bsky.social who fought for this infra.

#BikeHfx As far as I understand there is a light timing issue on E. Perimeter Road. Vehicles leaving the mall turning right have a dedicated right, it goes red, then this nebulous moment: red light, no pedestrian signal. 3s later, ped light. I see many people almost getting smoked in those 3s

Piece of an animal skull my daughter (who is clearly a zoologist in training given her obsession with all things bugs) found in the south shore this long weekend. She was super stoked. Found it on a beach during low tide. We looked it up and it looks to be of a deer.

The first signs of what I can only assume is a new road as the grand reshaping of the Windsor Street Exchange continues. This is adjacent to Bayne St., which is a common "short cut" through the WSE for many drivers.
