In the 1920s and 1930s, lidos in Britain boomed, part of an interwar municipal public health push. But everything changed in the 1960s. A government report on sport and community recommended more swimming pools - but said they should be indoor. Lidos fell out of fashion.
Joseph Chamberlain, MP for Birmingham (later Birmingham West) from 1876 to 1914, was born on this day in 1836. Originally a Liberal, he later formed the Liberal Unionist Party in opposition to Irish Home Rule. He was a keen gardener, noted for his love of orchids.
