Here is a sample map showing languages that have borrowed Portuguese leilão. Hanzal (1998) writes that, in the Emirates, the word lēlām was introduced recently by sellers of secondhand goods. In Qatar, Al-Maliki (2000) describes a similar meaning. Auctions are not mentioned.

Uncle just said in Achomi: Starbucks te kone bez ham haste ستاربکس تِه کُنِ بِز هم هَسته "there's Starbucks even on a wasp's ass" i.e. you can find it everywhere bez بِز 'wasp' (probably onomatopoeic like English buzz, or from Middle Persian wabz 'wasp')

Some #Arabic words for nets and traps: شبكة /šabaka/ شرك /šarak/ مصيدة /maṣyada/ as in Proverbs 1:17-18 (Sin. ar. 597, ff. 39r-v): ينصبون شركهم ومصايدهم افكا ودغلا كما تنصب الشبكه للطير /yanṣubūna šurukahum wa-maṣāyidahum ʾifkan wa-daġalan kamā tunṣabu š-šabaka li-ṭ-ṭayr/ ET 👇

Bahraini Arabic word of the day ʕār, yʕūr 'to double over' خلاني اعور من الضحك xallāni āʕūr min iḏ̣-ḏ̣iḥik 'He made me double over with laughter' (I've only ever heard it in the present tense)

Earliest attestation is in a verse from the 10th century Baghdadi cookbook Kitāb al-Ṭabīkh: وأركبت ساف لحم فوق أليته وساف من بصل حلو ومن تمن 'A layer of meat underneath of which lies a layer of its own fat, and another of sweet onion, another of rice'

At the risk of asking a dumb question, why is rice تمن and not رز in Iraqi dialect? Is this a loan from somewhere obvious?

Twitter sucks (doesn't send notifications to people I reply to and wastes my time), and I remembered that this place exists. Wow, a lot of names I haven't seen in ages here
