It's possible that the seeds for Shin Godzilla (2016) were planted as far back as 1992 by Ishiro Honda sometime before his passing. A documentary titled "Ino-san’s Trunk: The Untold Bond Between Akira Kurosawa and Ishiro Honda" aired on NHK BSP in 2012 and supposedly re-aired in 2017. (cont.)

The final fact/tidbit of the takeover may require more research on my end, but in the meantime, here's a selection of amusing edits of the Japanese Shin Godzilla (2016) theatrical poster made to promote various products around the time of the film's release, where Godzilla is holding said products.

The manufacturer of the blood coagulant used to defeat Godzilla in Shin Godzilla (2016) is named Smart Brain Peculiar Chemicals Pharmaceutical Company. It is a reference to a conglomerate featured in the Kamen Rider series named Smart Brain, retroactively foreshadowing Shin Kamen Rider (2023).

During our glimpse of the social media response to Godzilla's radioactivity in Shin Godzilla (2016), we see a user with Asuka Langley Sohryu, a character from Neon Genesis Evangelion, as their profile picture. Their handle is also a reference to a nickname she gives to the protagonist, Shinji Ikari.

To make up for a lack of a post (or at least a non-joke one) yesterday, how's about I do two posts today? Well, it's partly because I can't make up my mind on which bit of trivia is more interesting, but keep your eyes peeled like this Godzilla cream puff!

A portion of a deleted scene from Shin Godzilla (2016) featuring the Japanese Prime Minister, which highlights his dread, pain and desperation from witnessing Godzilla's destruction and the overwhelming responsibility placed on him to defend the country. Why this was cut is unknown.

In Shin Godzilla (2016), a member of Rando Yaguchi's team theorised that Godzilla could evolve further and adapt to new situations in several ways. However, this was merely a hypothesis presented in the film as additional forms for Godzilla were never actually considered, even if concept- (cont.)

A fake smartphone in the shape of Godzilla’s second form (aka Kamata-Kun) in Shin Godzilla (2016) was unveiled by Toho as an April Fool’s Day prank in 2017. The prank was so well-received that a large plush toy smartphone case of Kamata-Kun was officially released later that year.

Shin Godzilla was going to have new roars instead of the Showa ones, but according to Shinji Higuchi, they felt they couldn't surpass the originals. This was one of the new roar experiments, included in the bonus features of a 4-disc 4K UHD Deluxe Collector's Edition released by GKIDS in 2025.

Behind-the-scenes footage of Showa era kaiju films seems to be few and far between these days, but this footage of a school trip to the set of Destroy All Monsters (1968) has thankfully been archived. It's like peering through a window into a forgotten past! (Video credit: Gojisan95 on YouTube)

Ever wanted to taste Godzilla? Well, if you were in Japan in June 2001, you could have! The toy company Takara released canned foods themed after various Toho kaiju. Some of these included 100g of corned beef as “Godzilla Meat”, 15 quail eggs as “Godzilla Eggs” and barbecued chicken as “Rodan Meat”.

Gameplay from Godzilla: Giant Monsters All-Out Typing Attack, a 2001 Japanese PC typing game developed by Profire as a tie-in for GMK. The player takes control of one of five version of Godzilla as they type onscreen phrases with their keyboard to blast obstacles and monsters with his atomic breath.

Rampage Godzilla, a 1955 tie-in manga for Godzilla Raids Again, features four original monsters not seen in the film named Gyottos, Zottos, Osoros and Sugon. Their names were initially ones proposed for Anguirus, but they were rejected and repurposed as the names of these monsters in this manga.

(very late) ADDENDUM: Titan X, seen in the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, is not based on the Kraken or any similar creatures. Instead, she is based on the Mapuche god of water, Coi Coi-Vilu, a snake-like creature said to be the ruler of the sea and all sea-dwellers in Mapuche myth.

A peculiar inconsistency in the lore of the MonsterVerse is that, to date, there have been two interpretations of the Kraken, and it seems Legendary has been undecided on which is definitively considered it. This thread will go over both and speculate on a possible third on the horizon.

A series of fake leaks that circulated the internet during the production of Godzilla: Final Wars (2004). At least one of these images can be traced back to the Clubtokyo.org website, but their original sources seem to be lost. If anyone can find where these originated from, please let me know!
