Our new Nat Plants paper introduces WALLΦ, a genetically encoded cell wall pH sensor, and reveals that root developmental zonation is independent of local cell wall pH. Wall pH supports growth at the organ level, but local growth patterns are governed by other mechanisms. doi.org/10.1038/s414...

New Article: "Root hair lifespan is antagonistically controlled by autophagy and programmed cell death" rdcu.be/fhdSG Autophagy negatively regulates senescence-induced programmed cell death to maximize the functional lifespan of root hairs. #PlantScience
In this Primer, @eugeniapitsili.bsky.social and @moritznowack.bsky.social discuss the cellular and molecular frameworks governing the initiation and execution of programmed cell death in plants: doi.org/10.1242/dev....

Intracellular pathogens can form extensive hyphal structures. Here, the pathogen Phytophthora palmivora (magenta) produces invasive hyphae in a living epidermal cell of a Nicotiana root. The plant surrounds the invader by an 'extra-invasive hyphal membrane' (yellow)📸 @alexguyon.bsky.social

The fantastic work of @kampova.bsky.social is finally out in PNAS: weather sensing and programmed cell death in anther dehiscence and opening. Cool science and awesome microscopy! @svosolsobe.bsky.social @handle.invalid @moritznowack.bsky.social
Stomatal transpiration and rapid programmed cell death ☠️ triggered by lowered ambient humidity causes anther tissue collapse for effective pollen release !
