Fantastic fruit fly filled open day at UEA. In one of the happy places when I get to talk people’s ears offs about all the fruit flies and what we can do🪰🍎🦠 #Research #Medfly #Drosophila

www.cam.ac.uk/news/women-s... Out of 86 scientists in GCSE & equivalent exam board specifications, just 1 is a woman. The study found a "compelling correlation" between this and the STEM subjects girls study at KS5. Need to change things up! #WomenInSTEM #ScienceEducation #InclusiveEducation
Women scientists almost entirely omitted from exam boards’ compulsory learning material for UK schools
An absence of women scientists featured in UK exam board specifications for science could be a factor in the disproportionate number of girls dropping STEM subjects at 16, and contributing to the gend...

Why grouping intralocus and interlocus phenomena under one umbrella of “sexual conflict” is a mistake. Insightful paper from @imprintedgene.bsky.social, @andygardner.bsky.social y.social, Tracey Chapman, and @jennyperry.bsky.social yperry.bsky.social. royalsocietypublishing.org/rspb/article...
Sexual conflict and sexual pleiotropy
Abstract. Natural selection might favour brightly coloured males and drab females. A male and a female might disagree about whether to mate. Such tensions

I’m going to rewatch this about explaining stuff to an LLM before the next time I’m about to have a fight with one. Good vid by Nathan Doan
Was really impressed with the picture of a Medfly that the 5yo (×4+4) drew today. What an artist! Would you be able to tell if I didn’t say?? #Medfly #Tephritid
Touching grass and finding my happy place. Just some pics of me and the fellas that I’ve met out on the streets lately.
New preprint from my PhD is out! We show that loss of miR‑219 disrupts neural border gene programs and prevents neural crest specification. Excited to finally share it 🚀 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... #xenopus #miRNA #genomics
MicroRNA miR-219 is required for neural border and neural crest development in Xenopus neurulas

Help please science people! Is this worryingly off? Amplification of V1-V9 of 16S rRNA. It should amplify at 1465 bp, but has amplified at > 1500 bp… 0.8% gel, 90V for 60 mins, DNA samples of Medfly tissues. I think am too naive to know if it is ok… Thank you! #PCR #MolecularBiology #Microbiome

I'm afraid there'll be much, much more of this going forward. Prospective students and parents should check very carefully before applying to university courses that may not exist by the next autumn, and may be closed even while they're on them. www.itv.com/news/central...
Nice read on page 26 of issue 93 of the @gensocuk.bsky.social magazine… Jokes aside, it was really lovely to reflect on the studentship I did with the Genetics Society back in the summer of 2022. It really gave me the confidence to believe that becoming a researcher was actually within reach!!
Nice wrap to the CEEC Rebellion today, was grateful to have received Runner up for Best Talk also. Brilliant couple of days, thank you to the organisers! #CEECRebellion2026
