It sounds silly to many until you live with an EV, but it’s true: charging it is effectively zero effort. You never have to stop at a gas station after work. Never panic in the morning when you realize you forgot to fuel up yesterday. Never have to fuel up before a trip. That weekly effort, gone.

Despite Trump’s best efforts to bully them, the Supreme Court just reaffirmed that if you are born in America, you belong in America.

It’s pretty cool seeing solar panels ramp up production, charge up the battery and power the house, ramp down as the sun sets, and the battery take over. I don’t *need* to look at this every day, but I’m a dork, so this brings me immense satisfaction right now watching it work.

One fun rabbit hole for home solar is EV charging. EV charging without solar is simple: charge when your rates are lowest (usually overnight)—you set your charge window in your car, plug it in whenever you need to, and it does the right thing. Solar’s a little more complex.

Culver’s is pretty variable from location to location (or region to region?) in my experience. I’ve had it in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Florida. Culver’s in Wisconsin and Minnesota was one of the better fast food burgers I’ve had. Culver’s in Florida was not worth the calories, fat, and guilt.

I know you all know this, but you do know that air conditioning doesn’t actually cool the air down? Right? It removes the heat. Which sounds similar, except for the fact that the heat still exists, and needs to be exhausted somewhere else. Usually out your window. That’s the heat island effect.

This is a good thread. The downsides and risks of AI use and systems are represented pretty well in discussions of them, but those discussions often use an idealized version of comparative human processes which ignore real downsides and harm they cause.

I had strong priors against LLMs for medicine. There are a lot of doctors in my family and I grew up viewing doctors as careful, skilled professionals. I had plenty of bad medical experiences, but I thought it would be hard to do better. Then an LLM found a cure for my 2 decade chronic condition...

Under discussed in the EV range anxiety wars is road trip destination charging: not all of it has to be DCFC. Eg on our trip to Big Sur this month, we stayed the night on the way in Pismo Beach. We arrived with ~33%, plugged into the hotel’s level 2 charging, and left the next morning at 100%.

This is nothing more than literal fantasy. We tried to use force to compel them into surrender in the initial wave; it failed because Iran’s government didn’t collapse and then they demonstrated they could destroy Gulf production at will. Then, we repeatedly threatened to go nuclear, and… didn’t.
