The War of the Worlds owes its greatest debt to producer George Pal. He knew how to put films like this together and was a driving force in the film's innovative and unique special effects. Who could forget those bright green Martian ships? It won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Gort resurrecting Klaatu, is but one of Wise's religious references in the film. His well practiced "newsreel" approach to storytelling is one of the few similarities to Bates' original, superior version. A favorite ever since watching it with my father. So 25 years later in 1988, I painted this.

I have always had a soft spot for Disney's "The Black Hole". The whole affair is rather clunky but the USS Cygnus is the highlight for me. The ship is a giant gothic cathedral in space filled with horrors and designed by mad scientists!
