Back in the day, they didn't have CGI. To film the shot, you create the shot and turn on the camera. You want a scene with a large army you get a lot of extras to film it. Even TV shows (especially the 80s) had a lot of dangerous stunt work where they just filmed it. youtu.be/LUiVT43M0Ow?...
