John Thornton, a founder of The Texas Tribune and one of the most vital and influential leaders in nonprofit journalism, died on Saturday. His passing is an immeasurable loss for our staff, our board and our supporters and readers, past and present.

Thornton conceived of the idea of a nonprofit news enterprise to engage Texans with their government, and then helped support similar outlets across the country. He died Saturday at 59.

Trump's nominee to lead USDA, Brook Rollins, is president of America First Policy Institute, and previously led the Texas Public Policy Foundation. Far-right Texas oil billionaire Tim Dunn is on the board of both think tanks. Heritage/Project 2025 leader Kevin Roberts is TPPF's former CEO.
