A few drops of blood from each bird, each containing billions of copies of the genome, are sitting in a freezer at Penn State, soon to be sequenced. This is just how the whole process of doing science starts when you're lucky and work as a field biologist in evolutionary genomics. What a life!

Then I stretched tips into a canopy shape while color-coding to convey the original time scale/branch lengths. I also experimented with a few other weird layouts, e.g. if one could make branches not criss-cross here, it would also look a bit like a tree if you drew the stem in as the trunk...
