I haven't watched The Odyssey but one critique I've read resonates with what I felt about Oppenheimer - that that movie's particular focus on the protagonist turns a massive and complex state effort and world historical atrocities into a story of personal genius and struggle of one man.

Football is political whether we like it or not. We love the game but it's absurd to try to ignore the history and the power structures. Every four years the world comes together in passion and a kind of wrenching celebration because of the history and power structures not in spite of it.

I follow the World Cup partly for the beautiful game (sans the diving and the stutter steps) and partly for the postcolonial peoples' uprising, whether from the banlieues or the Congo River.
Again, postcolonial nations rise! Congratulations to Morocco, such a football force. Sorry for the Netherlands. I was in Rotterdam during the 2014 World Cup and it was pretty electric in the streets. Oranje is an excellent color.

Today I signed an Executive Order for every worker exposed to extreme heat on the job. It requires multilingual heat safety guidance for workers, a review of construction site heat safety practices, and heat illness prevention plans at every mayoral agency.
