Our research is embedded with relational intentions, not because it's easy, but because it is most conducive for accelerated forward movement.

The drive to "put people in their place" is a specific form of hostility that is thinly veiled and widespread. It echoes with violence and seeks to cover over the talents and capabilities of people from marginalized social backgrounds.

Once you peel back all of the layers, the problems we're seeking to solve are inherently relational. We understand this and build accordingly, collaborate accordingly.

Uncovering dynamics that don't readily spring to mind is where the value of 'research done right' unfolds. Regardless of what the researcher brings with them to the interview, within the interview, the respondent is the expert and should be treated as such. The insights are the reward.

From a fully engaged landlord: “I think that poor money management is very significant. Very. I think that we look over that more than anything. And I think that the ability to say 'no' to other things that take your money... that's missing out of the big pot of decision-making.” #RespondentQuotes

One thing that became clear through this study is the connectedness between one's personal commitment to 'landlording' and how they spoke about the social reality of eviction. When asked "who gets evicted?" there was a dramatic difference between fully engaged and unengaged landlords.

A few years back, we did an eviction study centered on landlord activities and their perspectives. We created the environment necessary for landlords to speak freely. What returned to us were nuanced insights that defy easy-made narratives.

“…But what ended up happening is I found out that I could not be, except for during the pandemic, basically, the landlord that I wanted to be and make cash flow; that I either needed to treat it like a charity or be the landlord I didn't want to be." 1/2 #RespondentQuotes

In research, subtle things matter. How you word a question, how you communicate about a research initiative beforehand, and the spaces you provide—matter.

Our primary thesis is that we can build a better world through a commitment to true reason, a deep recognition of interdependence, and by building and maintaining constructive relationships. Each of these elements are mutually reinforcing. Our work is cultivating the insights that light the path.

The organizations that view their diversity as a strength will win the future. This means keeping your organization free of conventional corporate hierarchies and upholding practices that affirm the person behind the role and the coherence between unity-in-diversity and mission advancement.

Life-giving interactions are the bricks of strong stakeholder relationships. Interactions can give life by inspiring hearts, through their insightfulness, and by sharing your challenges and triumphs in an intimate way. All of this builds trust, and trust builds loyalty and commitment.

Which cultural template will secure your position as an organization winning the future: a culture of putting people "in their place" or a culture where service providers are allowed to gravitate to their place of thriving and produce wonderful things?

“The proposal makes a host of changes, like capping security deposits at one month's rent, banning move-in fees, creating a registry of all rental units in the city and requiring landlords to provide valid reasons when they evict or don't renew their tenants.”
