Wow… it doesn’t feel like we are doing science anymore when ChatGPT helps create silly graphs for case reports. I certainly wasn’t a reviewer for this manuscript doi.org/10.1177/2055...

Veterinary nephrologist-urologist. Into old school D&D and the music I listened to in my 20s. Still shooting film.
Every time we administer iron dextran I call it “black blood of the earth”. And no one gets it. No one even comments, which means they just think I’m nuts. Is anyone else living on my plane of existence? youtu.be/OELYJ18gwWU

The 2025 ENOVAT guidelines suggest perioperative and post-op antibiotics are not needed for cystotomy. Old habits are hard to change, but WHY PRESCRIBE PRADOFLOXACIN FOR A CLEAN PROCEDURE?!?! Here comes more antibiotic resistance…
Subclinical bacteriuria didn’t affect survival or rate of progression in feline CKD. But ~80% of SBU cases were treated with abx, so this doesn’t really tell us if untreated SBU affects outcome. doi.org/10.1093/jvim... #vetneoh

Friendship’s Nephrology-Urology Service goes all out with ceramics! We work together, play together, and now craft together! This team is the best!
A while ago, we launched WormsAndGermsMap, for crowd-based reporting of infectious diseases in companion animals It didn't really work out, in large part because the tech wasn't ready (at least in our $ range) But, since tech (and diseases) have advanced, we're trying again 1/n
When cystectomy isn’t an option (trigonal lesions, surgical risk, etc. ) transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) can also be considered. Currently only offered at a few hospitals in the US. See your local DACVNU for more info!
Partial cystectomy, as part of a multimodal treatment plan including adjuvant medical therapy, can be associated with prolonged survival in select dogs and cats with nontrigonal urothelial carcinoma. Learn more: jav.ma/uc

Interesting findings. But comparison to historical data isn’t ideal. And squeezing in a meta-analysis is a bit much. Especially when there is no assessment for bias risk. Personally, I’m not convinced.
Ureteroneocystostomy showed low major complication rates and favorable long-term outcomes, supporting its use as the primary surgical option when performed with appropriate case selection, surgical planning, tension-relieving strategies, and temporary ureteral catheterization: jav.ma/unc
Telmisartan significantly upregulated the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, increased total antioxidant capacity, and decreased IL-8 during the 28-day trial in healthy dogs. Open access article: jav.ma/telmisartan2
Yes- horses can get membranous nephropathy! Really nice spikes and holes on the silver stain and subepithelial complexes confirmed on EM. This horse had nephrotic edema and hypoalbuminemia. UPC was 5.8. #vetneph
Today we’re honoring Dr. M. Phyllis Lose, a 1957 graduate of the UPenn who became the first woman to specialize in equine veterinary med. Her career set a new standard for what was possible for women in the field, especially in a specialty that no woman had done. #WomensHistoryMonth

This week the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology certified the first 20 diplomates of the college. Congrats to the new DACVNUs! What an amazing landmark for our community!
Eva Furrow discusses metabolism and genetics of urolithiasis. The SLC2A9 mutation associated with urate urolithiasis is linked to spot color. The dogs were bred for looks and resulted in nearly 100% penetration of the mutation in the breed line!
Dr. Nolan presents on radiation treatment of canine bladder cancer.
Dr. Mastromauro reviews alternative therapies for canine bladder cancer.
Dr. Hess reviews immunotherapies for bladder cancer immunotherapy.
Dr. Breen provides and update on molecular methods of bladder cancer detection in dogs. Very strong genomic associations are seen in dogs with urothelial carcinoma.
Dr. Aberna discusses the role of TURBT in treating bladder cancer. Outcome improves with instillation of chemo immediately after resection.
Excited to be at the 2026 ACVNU Lower Urinary Tract Symposium! Stay tuned for highlights!
