I was trying to use basic shapes to design "Louise". Elementary shapes can be very powerful at times, but that time. I struggled to construct any viable idea using literally one elemental shape: right isosceles triangle, which can form a square. Then I switched to a thinner form, with thick vertical shapes and thin horizontal lines. That eventually led to the first version of the ambigram "LOUISE", which is not very good: "L" doubles as "E", "O" as "S", "Ui" as itself.

The 2-Minute Marketing Manifesto #1 Marketing is Fashionable The Vibe is the Variable. Marketing is not a static monument; it is a living, breathing aesthetic. We do not just sell functions; we sell "nows." If the energy is right, the logic follows. We recognize that trends are the language of the…

#1 Marketing is Fashionable The Vibe is the Variable. Marketing is not a static monument; it is a living, breathing aesthetic. We do not just sell functions; we sell "nows." If the energy is right, the logic follows. We recognize that trends are the language of the zeitgeist, and to be out of style is to be out of the conversation.

From the Sketchbook #001 There was an early period of my ambigram journey when I implemented the completed designs on smart phone apps like Assembly (a vector design tool), mostly for convenience as I didn't (and still don't) want to spend too much time polishing things–it's a "I've ten minutes to…

There was an early period of my ambigram journey when I implemented the completed designs on smart phone apps like Assembly (a vector design tool), mostly for convenience as I didn't (and still don't) want to spend too much time polishing things–it's a "I've ten minutes to sapre" kind of hobby, after all. That limitation forced a certain kind of approach to my exploring forms with the most basic lines and shapes.

The Enemies of Evidence-Based Approach
The mythical evidence-based approach— We hear about it all the time from executives and managers. We read about it all the time in reports, briefs and talks. We merely don't see it actually happening very often. The enemy of evidence-based approach is making decisions based on authority instead of on evidence. Its archenemy is the total disregard for evidence. A Legitemacy Test…

Thoughts on Community Engagement Design
Community engagement is not easy. It’s hard to get people to show up, harder to keep them stay involved. It’s hard to build authentic relationship, harder to build reciprocal one. It’s hard to facilitate two-way communication, harder to facilitate inclusive one. It’s hard to engage diversely, harder to do so representatively. It’s hard to establish well-organized engagement process, harder to establish adaptive one.

Manager, Leader and Organization Redux
Manager is the organization’s worker. Leader is the workers’ organization. Organization is the mobilization of bias. Manager and leader are very different roles. Manager is "the organization’s worker"—they implement the organization's agenda. Leader is "the workers’ organization"—they rally and represent the workforce. Organization is "the mobilization of bias"—it is not neutral, but a structure designed to achieve a specific purpose.
