Cities won’t stay livable by 2050 unless mitigation and adaptation become one strategy. Flood risks, heatwaves, energy demand and mobility issues all interact. SECAPs rarely show the full picture. Without assessing how measures influence each other, good intentions can turn into bad outcomes.
KNOWING Climate

HorizonEurope research project. KNOWING analyses the interaction of mitigation and adaptation measures. We help to identify the most suitable actions.
We need backup for climate transformation. And we’ll find it where we usually overlook: in civil society. A global survey shows that 89% of people want more climate action from their governments. We keep underestimating this massive willingness. But that is exactly where progress starts. (1/3)
🌍 Call for Abstracts – EGU 2026 Address Adaptation and mitigation jointly. Session ITS4.5/ERE6.8 looks at how to connect them through models, processes, and practice. Join us in shaping the next generation of climate strategies. 📅 Vienna, 2026 🔗 lnkd.in/dPEXfjb3 #EGU26 #ClimateAction #KNOWING
In South Westphalia, data shows that wind energy expansion in forested areas barely reduces CO₂ storage and when paired with smart reforestation, overall emissions drop. Climate neutrality doesn’t have to mean ecological trade-offs.
Sometimes, you need green + grey to keep a city safe. 🏘️🌊 Catalan city of #Granollers is tackling rising #floodrisk from its River. Nature-based solutions help with infiltration & delayed runoff peaks but simulations from KNOWING show they can’t reduce flooding enough during long, heavy rains.
Spain’s climate transition is reshaping its cities. In Granollers, near Barcelona, the focus lies on how to adapt urban infrastructure to #riverflooding while reducing emissions and improving quality of life. #climateresilience #urbanclimate #Granollers
Germany must designate 2% of its land area for wind energy in the coming years. But what does this mean for nature and the environment? 🌱⚡️ #energytransition #nature #climatepolicy
Models shape how we see the world and how we move within it. They frame what we call complex, and they guide how we respond. #ModellingMonday #KNOWINGProject
How do people respond to climate actions and how can we address that behaviour? 🌎🧑 The KNOWING Behaviour Model, developed by #AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, is based on survey data from over 6,000 respondents. It identifies six coping types & links behavioural responses to climate measures.
🌍 Cities need a strong team to defend against climate change! 🤾 In KNOWING, our domain models work together like players on the same field. Together, they create a coordinated strategy, helping municipalities like Granollers to adapt more effectively. Here’s our line-up in Granollers:
⚡ #ModellingMonday – What’s the best energy mix to reach full decarbonisation? 🌍 More renewables alone aren’t enough! We need the right combination that holds up under stress. 👇
What if your city park could protect you from flooding? 🌳 Urban floods are becoming more frequent and costly. Nature-based solutions might be the key. 👇 #ModellingMonday #Flood #ClimateAdaptation
🌡️ Heatwaves don’t hit every part of a city the same. Some neighbourhoods suffer much more than others. 👇 #ModellingMonday #Tallinn
How much can one extreme flood cost? In Naples modelling shows up to €463M per event, depending on the climate scenario (SSP) and which measures the city implements. Ambitious adaptation and climate awareness can cut costs by up to €270M per event vs inaction. #ClimateAdaptation #Naples
🌆 Tallinn under heat stress Estonia’s capital is getting hotter. As part of the #KNOWING project, Tallinn uses 9 climate & impact models to simulate urban heat, health risks, energy needs and adaptation. Goal: a greener, cooler, more resilient city by 2050. 🧵👇 #heat #urbanheat #heatstress
Is #windenergy in healthy #forests possible? 🌬️🌲 We did much wrong in Germany. Turning forests into weak plantations of timber. In KNOWING, the region of South Westphalia is now examining synergies and trade-offs in wind energy in forests. #climatechange 1/3
KNOWING uses 3 model types: 1️⃣ Climate – e.g. WRF → Forecasts heat, rain, extremes 2️⃣ Sector – e.g. CLUMondo → Simulates land use, energy, mobility 3️⃣ Impact – e.g. PALM-4U → Assesses effects on health & infrastructure #ModellingMonday #KNOWING
📊 #ModellingMonday To plan climate action effectively, we need to understand how climate, mitigation, and adaptation measures interact. Starting now, we’ll introduce one model each week in our new #ModellingMonday series. #KNOWING #ClimateTransformation #Adaptation #Mitigation
