My new article, "The Devil’s Playthings: Dolls, Mannequins and Diabolic Determinism in Mario Bava’s Lisa and the Devil,” explores #MarioBava’s 1973 film and its haunting vision of a world without free will: www.horrorhomeroom.com/wp-content/u... #HorrorFilm #FilmStudies #Eurocult
#LarryCohen's IT'S ALIVE (1974) is a film I slept on when I first saw it as a teenager. Means so much more to me as a middle-aged parent. John P Ryan's performance as the mutant baby's father is *layered.* Such an awesome film w/a great Bernard Hermann score too.
Revisiting Bruce Malmuth's NIGHTHAWKS (1981) for the first time in c.25 years, + I'm struck by (a) how good it is, + (b) that Jamie Gillis is in it. Music substitutions and cuts have kept me away from various DVD/BD releases so far, but I recently bought the Shout Select disc. 'Tis good.
Really enjoyed the two #OlivierGruner films that have popped up on @arrowplayer.bsky.social recently, Jon Hess' MARS (1997) and Avi Nesher's SAVAGE (1996). Two blasts from the past that I had almost forgotten about. 1/
Film and Fountain Pen Nerd Alert. INFERNO is one of my fave #DarioArgento films, and when I first watched the film in the 1980s I remember being struck by the vintage #FountainPen Rose (Irene Miracle) uses in the opening sequence. 1/
Go on, then. Never seen this one, surprisingly, so happy to give it a watch this evening. #NightGame #RoyScheider
Apple TV's plot summary for Michael Winner's DEATH WISH (1974) is wild.
Finished two articles recently. Relaxing Friday watching @Criterion's stupendous new 4k release of one of my fave #JohnWaters films, DESPERATE LIVING. Plus a glass of vodka on ice. Nice.
FUCK. YES.
***ANNOUNCEMENT*** Coming on September 8th on Blu-ray in the US only from @88films.bsky.social: #TheHauntedCopShop (1987)! Before he became the darling of the arthouses, Wong Kar-wai (Chungking Express, In The Mood For Love) co-wrote this bawdy horror-comedy. It's set in a police precinct that
Rewatching #DavidCronenberg's CRASH (1996), I'm struck by the memory that when I saw this at the cinema, 30 years ago, I was good friends at university with a young woman who had bad facial scarring from a car accident that also killed her father. Strange what lingers in memory.
Really pleased with the new the new Kino Lorber Blu-ray release of Oliver Stone's TALK RADIO (1988). This has long been a favourite of mine, since encountering it on VHS c.1990. Massive upgrade over my old DVD. Extras are fine... 1/2
Starting a rewatch of #CRACKER. Stellar writing by #JimmyMcGovern and a superb performance from #RobbieColtrane. This one hits much differently when you revisit it as a 40-something with a family. Shame the home video releases are all compromised in one way or another.
Really need to dig out my collection of Philip K Dick's short stories, as I want to reread "Second Variety" and "Jon's World," and then rewatch Christian Duguay's adaptation, SCREAMERS (1995).
In the pipeline: a book chapter about two of my favourite US horror films of the 1980s; an article about a 1970s British horror film I truly adore; and a couple of works of short fiction. In my happy writing place.

I have a tough time picking a favourite from Samuel Fuller’s body of work. However, White Dog (1982) is damn near the top of the list. #SamFuller #WhiteDog
Tony Stella has died. He was a brilliant artist & kind friend. When I began writing for @brightwalldarkroom.com, he was my 1st artistic collaborator, & his art--vivid, dreamy, evocative--made my scribblings seem professional. Intense, passionate, & dedicated to his craft like few I've ever known.
Tony Stella was a legend. Few can live up to the pure artistry he could express with his work. The world of film and art is lesser without him and he will be missed beyond compare. May he RIP.

Tonight's shenanigans. Superb film. Alan Sharp's script is as on-point as his scripts for NIGHT MOVES and ULZANA'S RAID (imo). Desperately needs a good BD or 4k (yes, please!) release. #TheLastRun #GeorgeCScott #RichardFleischer #AlanSharp
Rewatched Lumet's MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. Finney playing Poirot like the prancing ghost of a dying Old Europe alone makes this the best Agatha Christie adaptation.
#ThisNightIllWatchYour VHS rip of Nigel Dick's PRIVATE INVESTIGATIONS (1987). Never seen this one before. Curiousity piqued by the soundtrack LP I keep seeing in my local record store. Co-scripted by #JohnDahl. Half an hour in and enjoying the heck out of it.
The #BFI 4K release of #AkiraKurosawa’s #Yojimbo is something very special indeed. Not seen the film in maybe 20 years but it lives in my memory, beat by extraordinary beat. Beautiful presentation.
I've not got my copy yet but it was a great pleasure to write about #TroubleBound (1993) and, even more, to have the profound honour of director #JeffreyReiner fielding my questions about the film. Assembling the article was my own little tribute to #MichaelMadsen
Enjoying @krycekfacility.bsky.social 's article on "sharply written and stylishly shot" TROUBLE BOUND (1993) starring #MichaelMadsen and #PatriciaArquette in latest issue of NOIR CITY magazine.
Well, that's more than acceptable, I guess. Not surprised at all that #GregoryDark and #HarryDeanStanton were my "most watcheds" in 2025. #LetterboxdWrapped #GregoryHippolyte
Graffiti that, for a time, was emblazoned on the sea wall at the North Beach in Cleethorpes, on the Lincolnshire coastline.
I'm kind of thinking that #AbelFerrara's superb #neonoir FEAR CITY (1984) is quite, um, poorly represented by the only two quotes from the film that the IMDb list for it... This from a film that has some superb lines (not these two) in its script.
It was an absolute pleasure to be a guest on this podcast episode. THE MIND OF MR SOAMES is a tremendously good little film, touching on some fascinating themes, with an exceptional performance from Terence Stamp.
A tremendous film, it fires up so many questions and ideas! @krycekfacility.bsky.social & myself did a pretty deep dive into it here… bsky.app/profile/amic...
