A dragonfly perches at the end of dead twig, against a uniform tan background. The thorax is blue-purple and the abdomen is bright pink. Both of those body sections are slightly pruinose (meaning like they look like they have a little white dust on them). The head is dominated by dark purple eyes. The wings are clear except for dark veins and dark pterostigmata (small colored areas near the wingtips).

Palais Garnier, Paris #photography

The Palais Garnier, also known as the Opéra Garnier, is a historic 1,979-seat opera house in Paris, France. Built between 1861 and 1875 for the Paris Opera at the behest of Emperor Napoleon III, it was designed by the architect Charles Garnier. The building is renowned for its opulent Napoleon III style, featuring a grand staircase, a massive bronze and crystal chandelier, and a ceiling painted by Marc Chagall. It is perhaps most famous worldwide as the setting for Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel, The Phantom of the Opera.
Architecture and Design
The Palais Garnier is considered a masterpiece of the Second Empire style, blending elements from the Baroque, classicism, and Renaissance architecture. Charles Garnier used seventeen different kinds of material for the facade, including multicolored marble, stone, and gilded bronze.
The interior is equally spectacular, featuring:
The Grand Staircase A sweeping double staircase made of white marble with a balustrade of red and green marble.
The Auditorium A traditional Italian horseshoe-shaped hall that can accommodate nearly 2,000 people, famous for its red velvet seats and massive seven-ton chandelier.
The Grand Foyer A lavish hall reminiscent of the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, designed for spectators to stroll through during intermissions.
History and Legacy
The opera house was the primary home of the Paris Opera and the Paris Opera Ballet until 1989, when the new Opéra Bastille opened. Today, the Palais Garnier is used mainly for ballet performances. It has been a designated French historic monument since 1923.
