A deep dive into my Forgejo setup
I've finally found the will to setup my own personal Git forge. In this article I'm going to present in details my set up and discuss pros and cons that come with it

Funny how Anthropic initially hyped me into agentic coding while quickly becoming one of the tech companies I now despise the most. Since long I've moved out of Claude Code and into Pi + open weights models, very happy about that choice. Kind of related: raymyers.org/post/zig-cre... #postroll

The #selfhost fever is still high 🌡️ I want to resurrect my old tech blog, need some nice Markdown editor, heard well about Obsidian BUT don't want to pay for the monthly sub... Result: CouchDB up and running as rootless Podman service, mobile/mac apps synching via github.com/vrtmrz/obsid... 🥰

#Forgejo v16 is out: forgejo.org/2026-07-rele... forge.l3x.in already upgraded, process is sleak: push change to ansible repo (private) -> start apply job -> pull/restart forgejo image/container -> done. It works like a charm, the runner's job survives the forgejo process restart ⭐️🌈🕺 #selfhost

Had some fun with #Deno, #IRC and #Chatto today: forge.l3x.in/alex/irc-gre... Just a very simple bot to get notified in Chatto when a new user joins our IRC channel. Made me remind the good ol’ days 🤓

If I hadn't already enough reason for abandoning GitHub, today I learn that you need IPv4 to e.g. download artifacts there. #til
Annoyed by the buzz around Bun, I decided to move into #Deno and so far I'm pretty happy about that decision. It's such a better interpreter than Bash, lovely that it comes with batteries included too 🔋 WIP: rewriting all non-trivial shell scripts in Typescript for clarity/maintainability/sanity.
Work in progress: make my #atproto PDS (atproto.com/guides/self-...) the source DB for all things social. Done: - website's profile pic - website's homepage microblog entries roll - website's /postroll and /til pages ToDo: - Gravatar picture #selfhost

I'm a simple person: I like Postgres, I use Neon (happily), I share this: postgresisenough.dev

Since I have Podman + Forgejo + actions runner everything is a nail to hammer. Here's a new repo to make sure I won't lose track of my Terraform S3 backend bucket: forge.l3x.in/alex/terrafo... The cool bit is that after bootstrap it authenticates to AWS via OIDC so no more tokens needed 🎊

Wrapping up self hosting projects: - forge.l3x.in : works like a charm, CI/CD and all, with github.com/shaftoe/pi-c... integrating natively - gist.l3x.in: does the job, proposing a patch to automate user creation (github.com/thomiceli/op...) - social.l3x.in: PDS sourced by this very feed #yakshave
Hello ATproto 👋 I'm migrating microblogging away from my Mastodon account, it served me well for the last years but self hosted PDS seems to be a better fit for my digital needs. This very feed just became the new SoA for some of a.l3x.in content (/postroll and /til). Say hi if you're on Bluesky!
