Single parents and disabled households among the worst hit by energy arrears, official data shows

Single-parent families, disabled households and Black families are bearing the brunt of the country’s energy debt crisis, according to new analysis of the government's own official household survey, and newer research suggests the pressure is still growing. The analysis, by Ana Castro and Jonathan Bradshaw at the University of York, draws on the Family Resources Survey 2024/25. The survey asked whether people had been in arrears with their gas, electricity or other fuels over the previous 12 months, and it found that 3.9% of households, around 1.1 million in total, had fallen behind.

Hackney: Labour Councillors Oppose End to Haifa Twinning Amid Media Furore 

By a Hackney North and Stoke Newington CLP member In May’s borough elections, the Green Party captured Hackney’s executive mayoralty with Green candidate Zoë Garbett winning more than 47% of the vote, nearly 7,000 ahead of Labour incumbent Caroline Woodley. The Greens also gained an absolute majority of Council seats, 42 of 57, with Labour reduced to just nine. Among the Green manifesto pledges was a commitment to bring an end to a long-standing, but dormant twinning relationship with Israel’s third largest city and principal naval port, Haifa. Mayor Garbett moved swiftly to honour her pledge.

Both the Blair Labour governments and the current one have introduced legislation, which seriously impacts on certain sections of the working class. Their strategy was, and continues to be, that they could encourage and maintain support from those in work, in the working and middle classes, only if they assured them that they were more valuable and deserved more support than migrants and asylum seekers and those with disabilities and on benefits. This is no more than a divide and rule approach inherited from the ‘glory’ days of the British empire and reminiscent of Victorian ‘deserving poor policies.
