Last week, Breakthrough T1D Canada had the privilege of co-hosting a workshop with Canada’s Stem Cell Network and Shift Health focused on a critical and complex topic:  "Unlocking Access for Type 1 Diabetes Cell Therapies in Canada: Identifying Solutions for Regulatory and Reimbursement Success."

‘Official’ results from the Vertex VX-880 trial using stem cell-derived islets for people with type 1 diabetes #T1D 10 out of 12 people with reduced or eliminated need for insulin 🎉 But note the need for immunosuppression and limited eligibility… this is not (YET) the ‘cure for everyone’

Stem Cell–Derived, Fully Differentiated Islets for Type 1 Diabetes | NEJM

Zimislecel is an allogeneic stem cell–derived islet-cell therapy. Data on the safety and efficacy of zimislecel in persons with type 1 diabetes are needed. We conducted a phase 1–2 study of zimisle...

Excellent to see this Breakthrough T1D and CIHR-funded research by Dr. Mahmud at SickKids (Toronto) that shows improved glycemic control and kidney function when using the drug dapagliflozin in youth. Exciting to see research progress toward adjunctive therapies for #T1D.

Clinical trial shows improved health outcomes for teens with type 1 diabetes

A clinical trial involving adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) has found a combination therapy may reduce chronic kidney disease and improve health outcomes. The findings could help guide more prec...

What a legacy 🇨🇦 Drs. Till & McCulloch discovered stem cells in the 60s which changed the future of regenerative medicine and contributed to solving one of the biggest hurdles (having enough cells) in the quest to cure type 1 diabetes #T1D #stemcell

(1/3) It is with profound sadness that we honour the passing of Dr. James Till, a pioneering Canadian scientist whose work, alongside Dr. Ernest McCulloch, laid the very foundation of stem cell research. stemcellnetwork.ca/celebrating-...

Great new research - one of the difficult aspects of #T1D is that there’s no way to “see” islet or beta cells to check if they are being attacked or functioning well so new biomarkers are important! (More info in comments…)

So much knowledge comes from a registry - this is a catalyst for many other research projects and often helps guide research priorities! If you (or your child) lives with type 1 diabetes #T1D #LADA and are located in Canada 🇨🇦, PLEASE consider contributing to research! (Completely virtual too).

VERY important research from the fantastic Dr. Jane Speight. The burden of self-managed chronic conditions should not be underestimated! If you live in Canada and want to find a mental health worker that understands diabetes burden ( #T1D or #T2D) - check on our directory.breakthrought1d.ca

Unfortunate to see today’s news from Vertex about their VX-264 therapy for #T1D but this is why we always have ‘multiple shots on goal’! Considering that the same cells are being used as in VX-880 (so far great data) it’s reasonable to assume that the device encapsulation was the problem here.

Always exciting to see new Clinical Practice Guidelines, but these are especially exciting: - T1D across the lifetime instead of broken up into stages 👏 - recommending AID for all ages and stages of T1D 👏👏 - first in the world to recommend considering the use of adjunctive therapies for T1D 👏👏👏

Really fascinating debate at #ATTD2025 about whether or not we should use placebos in trial design for preventative therapies of #T1D now that Tzield (teplizumab) has shown efficacy and is approved in a few countries. Heavy hitters Colin Dayan and Laura Jacobsen presented excellent points!

📣Students and postdocs, consider Canadian universities for grad studies! Tuition is typically offset by teaching assistantships for seminars/labs, and applying is as simple as making contact with a PI to start. If you’re in the field of #T1D - reach out if you’d like us to help make a connection!

It’s pretty easy to “apply” for a PhD in Canada, and a little different from most US places, just send a cover letter, CV and undergrad transcript to a PI you’d like to work with. Put some effort into it, make sure you convey what you’re applying for and why.
