We report: the sun is flattening itself against the horizon as best as it can. The shock of red is hypnotising us, keeping us rooted to the ground while we watch it go down. It grows redder and redder as it sinks into the earth, even when only a few embers remain.

Digital painting of a sunset sky above dark hills: the sun is bright red in a mostly clear, but hazy sky. There is a strip of dark grey around the sun, a few wispy orange clouds just above it, and some pinkish grey clouds further up.

We report: we start heading into the evening with the clouds, and the light behind the haze is becoming greyer before it can turn blue. Some other day, some other year, this could be rain, but it is not so easy today - even though we cannot help but look for it.

Digital painting of a countryside landscape under an overcast sky: yellow, harvested fields stretched over some hills, with patches of trees scattered around and in between. The horizon is a bit of a blur, the sky is grey, full of clouds.

We report on the horizon: a weak imitation of a squall line is helpfully displaying stages of the lifecycle of cumulonimbus, and in chronological order, too. Our expert finds it a valuable teaching moment, and spends some time pointing out the calvus and capillatus species.

Digital painting of a series of several distant cumulonimbus, all in a line, in order of maturity. The first one is bubbling, developing upwards, and the next ones are all gradually flattening, until starting to dissipate. There are smaller clouds surrounding their base. The sky is otherwise blue, with long cirrus above.

We report: threads of light are trailing after the sunset, and the dry air is becoming more breathable. It has felt like noon all day, the intensity of the sun, the narrow, sharp shadows. Our expert, remarkably, manages to feel a little cold when a light breeze shakes the wheat.

Digital painting of a sunset over a countryside path. The path is separating two fields, one on the left where the hay has been cut and rolled into balls, one on the right where the wheat is still growing. There are trees on the horizon. The sky is blue, going on grey from the dusk light; there are glowing, thin, wispy clouds sprawled across the sky, orange and yellow.

We report: when we get to the shore in the blue hour, the gulls pay us no mind, their shrieks too loud in our morning ears. The sand under our feet is dry, but feels liquid for how cold it is. The sky is opaque, waiting for some pink to bleed through in the next half hour.

Digital painting of a seaside landscape at dusk: the sky is a plain blue grey over a calm, dark blue sea. There are gulls flying all over. In the foreground, the way to the beach is framed both sides by dunes covered in some sort of cordgrass, dark in pre-dawn light.

We report: where the river meets the sea, there is something in between mist and a light drizzle. It stays right here, a light blur on the horizon, the air brinier than ever. The ducks are searching the silt for snails and worms. Our expert‘s hair is curling around their face.

Digital painting of a seaside landscape, with fuzzy trees in the distance, and a river bank in the middle ground, a few houses beneath some tall trees. The water is almost mirror-like, a couple of small boats floating there. There are a few birds flying as well. The sky is overcast, grey.

We report: the sky has come down to meet us, low, low, until we touch the clouds - the clouds touch us. We are aware that it was supposed to be hot, or at least we heard it would be, but we find it difficult to picture while mist is dribbling down our nose and eyelashes.

Digital painting of a maturing wheat field caught in a drizzle: the sky is grey, opaque, almost featureless. There are distant fields and trees in the background, faded in the rain, as well as a nearer group of trees on the edge of the field, in the centre of the frame. There is a wild carrot flower in the foreground.

We report: on this coast, the wind rarely gets below the third class on the Beaufort scale, and today is no different. There is a high pressure system over this region, but a breeze will always find its way to the shore. Cirrus bloom in the sky all the while.

Digital painting of a seaside landscape: there is distant land on the horizon, some buildings gleaming white in the sunshine. The sky is bright blue, with white, feather-like clouds spreading out across the frame. The sea is also bright blue and green, with the thinnest bit of sea foam forming over the gentle waves.

We report: we have to wait longer and longer for the sky to get dark enough that the stars will come out. We are not immune to getting sleepy long before any meaningful stargazing can be done. However, clear night skies have been sparse lately, so we make an effort to stay alert.

Digital painting of a nightfall scene: the sky is dark blue, a little foggy, with many glowing stars scattered all over. The landscape is dark, some grass, three trees, and a wire fence in the distance.
