Speaking of mythic/heroic film epics about humans and gods--have a great one. Not based on a specific poem that I know, but on the oral storytelling of the Bambara people of West Africa.

YEELEN (1987); a fantastically beautiful Malian heroic epic, with a thrillingly grounded yet awe-inspiring depiction of magic as a natural emanation of humanity's storytelling & linguistic abilities, which can birth gods & fell entire peoples. Power, gorgeous & terrible. Loved this.
