Power failure in Manchester (LOL) has significantly delayed my journey home. Virtually all TPX services delayed and cancelled it seems. My cancelled train was a 5 carriage TPX train. This 3 carriage Northern service is way over capacity with people stood in the vestibules & right down the carriage.

I’ve enjoyed a full week off work - taking advantage of the beginning of summer holidays to take annual leave. The reality of 500 emails is tomorrow’s job ahead of a couple of days back. I’ve really enjoyed this time — but also need to face the reality of working on an article and PFHEA whole off.

When reality surpasses fiction! Top: fictional forecast for August 2050, broadcast by French TV in 2014 to warn about the consequences of global warming. Bottom: Real French forecast for yesterday, June 22, 2026.

Really enjoyed this last workshop at #ALDcon26 which focused on object-based learning for critical thinking (and group work and human interaction!). We were able to get to grips with a range of objects and much stimulating conversation. (& thanks to Leeds Library for okaying sharing the images)

Today #ALDcon26 is opened with a panel debate focused on embedding academic literacies. The panel comprised of both academics and Learning Development specialists ❤️. This panel showed the advantages of bringing together expertise in subject content (lecturers) and student learning (LDers). #loveLD

A panel of 4 LDers and 3 academics sat at the front of a lecture theatre under a slide: Embedding Academic Literacies

A very poignant point raised at the #ALDcon26 panel: Learning Development has a scholarly-led approach to student support. BUT the scholarship playing field is not level. LDers have valuable contributions to make through research, but little access to funding & opportunity to drive forward. #loveLD

This is not to say Learning Developer is not a role we should advocate for (& protect?). But Learning Development is an idea, an approach, a way of working -- a way that all our welcome to. So how we do define Learning Developer versus Learning Development - and advocate for both? #loveLD #ALDcon26

Interesting reflection for the Advocacy Working Group. I've spoken to many subject academics today, all who have questioned their belonging with @aldinhe.bsky.social and at #ALDcon26. Not because they are not welcome, but because they are impostors, or 'not LDers'. How do we break that perception?

At #ALDcon26 Dr Sonia Hood & Georgia Koromila are posing the question: To target or not? This is a fascinating debate that asks how we direct Learning Development interventions to specific audiences & why it matters. #loveLD As their session chair, I've had the pleasure of capturing this debate.

A mind map

I have the pleasure of chairing Mini keynote 8 of #ALDcon26 To target or not? How we direct Learning Development (LD) interventions to specific audiences and why it matters. Georgia Koromila and Sonia Hood from Reading are leading on this fascinating debate.

Closing the awarding gap work allows us to be relevant and raise our profile

But requires us to target certain demographics

Levels the playing field
X  Excludes some students
?  Communication potentially reinforces deficit stereotypes

If you are registered for #ALDcon26, please do check out our Advocacy Working Group stall - we have a space for you to add your thoughts on advocacy, and we'd appreciate your input!
