Keep calm and carry on while international think tanks put your city in the red zone for potential Russian drone attacks. Damned if you panic, damned if you are oblivious. And occasionally be reminded that this a "proxy war" anyways. Such is the life in #Baltics.

The conservative bias of both journalists and politicians is one of the major problems of liberal democracy today. After ignoring, and often even dismissing, far-right voters for decades in the late 20th century, they have declared them "the people" in the early 21st century.

(Swiss) politicians are bad at knowing what voters actually want. There is a clear conservatism bias: Political elites systematically perceive voters as more conservative than they really are, irrespective of the actual policy debate (e.g., raising retirement age) www.defacto.expert/2026/07/28/s...

Carney’s speech is an excellent example of crafting a new blueprint when all the other discourses have unraveled. Shows how much regular political talk is just filling space (even if it is necessary, just like the other fiction he referred to in the speech).

How can 'Europe' as a signifier of progress in East-Central Europe be analysed critically but without dissmising its democratising potential? In this special section for "Baltic Worlds" we explore aspirational politics of Polish Left, contigent Euroscepticism of Hungary... 1/2

“The subliminal possessiveness toward a revolutionary heritage adds another dimension to Ukrainian art curator Vasyl Cherepanyn’s observation that the Maidan “was so fundamentally European that it turned out to be too European for today’s EU.”

A denial of death, post-truth, and "foul is fair" all speak to a refusal to acknowledge boundaries. For Trump and Putin, there is no boundary between real and unreal, good and evil, life and death. In the absence of any boundary, nothing means anything, and we face a nihilist abyss.

The way out is “not to ensure every citizen employs optimal epistemic practices, but to weaken their social identification with cranks and conspiracy theorists, and strengthen their identification with the broadly reliable collective practices of science, scholarship, journalism, law, and so on.”

Samuel Bagg@samuel-bagg.bsky.social · 11mo ago

Misinformation *is* central to democratic problems today, but the solution is *not* to correct such epistemic failures directly. Instead, we must address them at their roots, in social identity. Or so I argue in a new post for @apaphilosophy.bsky.social. blog.apaonline.org/2025/11/12/t...
