I've been kind of eh about this season's Game Changer and I think I know why: this season is their prog phase. Everything feels like the game equivalent of prog music.

Guitar practice for the psychobilly tune is moving along. Again. In practicing this I have to deal with two problems with myself. The first is that my motor control in general is...not bad, but just a bit wonky. But that becomes a big problem with guitar. Where I know I can play something,

Here's an example of pitch takes. I'm focusing on the pitch for the 2 notes in "never". #1 is too wobbly/pitchy. #2 is a retake, second note is much better but first still has a weird entry. #3 fixes that, but both notes still have a weird wobble so I also dialed back the vibrato to force it flatter

It has a concept of takes where if you don't like the timbre or pitch or whatever, you can say "have the models do these notes again." This all works really well, but there are sometimes still some notes that will not cooperate no mater what. Which is to say, I may have to use autotune on this.

You'd think computer-generated vocals would be too perfect on pitch and stuff. But this software uses machine learning to more accurately synthesize gliding into notes, dropping off at the end of a phrase, etc. But there's randomness involved and sometimes you can get really pitchy notes...

*finally* sorted out the last remaining big problem in this song. most of what's left is a list of a bunch of little things I'm running down. Maybe I'll have this ready to mix by the end of the week? Maybe?

I've had wah pedals for years but never played anything through a parked wah; now I'm doing that on 2 guitars on this song. For those not familiar, a parked wah is when you move a wah pedal to a position and then just leave it like that. You probably most know it as part of the guitar tone in this.

I can't remember what I was doing 5 minutes ago, but goddammit I have no trouble working on a reverb and just knowing that an 8th note at 148 bpm is 203 ms.

I put the headphones on. I had dialed the volume back to about 70% and they were still too loud, just shy of hurting. I sometimes forget how hot these K240s run compared to other phones. I'm glad I haven't been blasted by full volume yet.

One of the cats (I have a strong suspicion as to which) keeps cranking the headphone volume knob on my audio interface all the way up. Luckily my headphones have happened to be a good foot or two away from me when blasting each time this has happened.

A hard thing about working on music is the "I need to hear this like someone who's never heard it before" thing. Masking out everything I've been thinking about a section and struggling with and trying to figure out how it's going to land for people who don't know or care about any of that.
