Sancho you are not getting a sausage. Coffee stop before the ferry to Harwich.
“Er Chioschetto”, stand offering traditional Roman shaved ice (grattachecca). Experiencing a power cut this evening. Probably my last visit this summer.
I migrated from the original Bluesky to Eurosky which hosts this account. Now have an invitation from another European provider, W Social. I am not sure if there are reasons to move there other can curiosity. I believe W has been marketing well, bringing important European users into this network.
Sancho contemplating a news story apparently about Hitler stealing a mad dog.
Last night had a vivid antiquarian book trade bad dream involving a misunderstanding with a rare books librarian!
Some wonderful popular art last night, ballet, Prokofiev, ‘Romeo e Giulietta’, Teatro dell’ Opera di Roma, Circo Massimo. Big out-door event, broad crowd, generous prices, expressive acting & dancing, overtures telling you what’s happening. I went without camera (taking photos was banned anyway).
Very cool photo, taken last night by my partner with this phone. It shows a monastery garden on the other side of the road from us, with some sculpture from the roof of San Giovanni in Laterano (San Giovanni himself) peeking through.
Critters … naturally mummified animals found in Montefiascone seminary library, Lazio.
Target practice! Book from the library of Montefiascone seminary (Lazio, Italy) which has been fired at apparently by Napoleonic troops. It’s interesting how they couldn’t hit the armorial!
First thoughts seeing this in my email folder were “do I have any Plutarch? Do I want any?”
Philological waste: pages of seventeenth-century notes listing transliterated Turkish words with their equivalents in Italian, French, or Latin, reused to form pasteboards for the binding of a Persian manuscript. BnF, ms Supplément Persan 759
Sancho is actually wearing a Roma scarf but it’s pretty much the Spanish colours.
Straight off the boat. The Madonna del Mare (Our Lady of the Sea) yesterday evening after being in a boat procession along the local coastline of San Vincenzo, Tuscany. The attire (and shoe wear) of the first responders carrying the statue may reflect the journey they have just been on.
There were signs that we were approaching a C17 sanctuary of the originally Catalonian Virgin of Monserrat. Today on isola d’Elba.
1st-cent BCE mausoleum of noblewoman Cecilia Metella, subsequently reused in the C14 by the Caetani family to form part of a fortress. Via Appia Antica, Rome.
There’s a predator in the parmesan. Sancho in an Italian supermarket.
Photo taken today by my partner, of Sancho in the Parco degli Acquedotti in Rome.
Watched 2 or 3 episodes last night of the ‘Legally Blonde’ prequel ‘Elle’. I cannot recommend it as high art but did enjoy its tongue-in-cheek Gen X/Grunge nostalgia and will probably watch the rest.
I’m so excited! This week in my @wesleyanuniversity.bsky.social Center for Prison Education course—rare books! I’ve been working with our amazing Special Collections librarians to facilitate bringing some early editions of 17th, 18th, and 19th century poetry into the prison…
A holy mess. Facsimile copy of a charter of Hippolytus, 8th-century bishop of Lodi. Brescia, 1728.
The bonus #TransitDog of the day feels very safe traveling on his fast train.💜
And on the Italian fast train. He feels very safe in his pannier.
