An upmarket fantasy novel: Nymph's Pond
“My grandfather and my dad both, they wanted this place to become a café. Where people could chat and talk to a really, really nice scenery. Peaceful and quiet, with a little koi fish—” she made a little wave with her hand to indicate swimming fish. “And so I want to take up that dream where they left it off. I want to open the Worthington Gardens. And this place, I thought of calling Nymph’s Pond.”

The Pitch:
Damla needs the perfect portfolio to get into art school—and her mother would make the ideal subject. Only her mother refuses, escaping to the mayor’s pond, dwelling there despite the family not wanting her to. But what keeps her here?
How can Damla convince her mother to sit for her?
And what is it with the water that calls out to them both?

Snippet:
She decided to approach the figure.
The figure had a stillness to it that was familiar. But there was also an energy to it, one that Damla palpably felt like dew on her skin, if dew was covered in metal. When the figure saw Damla approach, it stood even straighter, opening its shoulders wide, as if bracing for whatever it thought Damla would do. She stopped then as well, by this point quite close to the pond’s edge, ahead of even Stella. She could slide into the pond’s surface since the water had receded quite the distance to gain the height that it did, but doing so — the thought of doing so — made her feel cold all over. And there was this wave, just above her head. She felt as if she’d stepped into a shadow.
“Tell me this is a dream,” Damla said.
The water told her no such thing. Of course it didn’t. The kind of reality that Damla wanted was only available for Jazmine. She got this instead. Something hard and stony settled inside of her. She couldn’t reach to hit it. Her throat locked up when she wanted to scream. The metallic dew on her face and neck made it hard to move. If this was the sublime, it was the ugliest shade of silver she’d ever seen.
