Aaron Huertas@aaronhuertas.bsky.social · 2w agoBuilding on your last point a bit more, it's not just volunteers and donors, but a lot of quiet labor they don't measure, e.g. a liberal parent of a trans kid who doesn't have time to volunteer might vote for you, but they're not going to remind their younger relatives to register and vote.
I’m not saying this didn’t happen before modern smartphones, but getting rid of the headphone jack partly to push people into buying more expensive earbuds has to be a contributor. Cheap headphones used to cost basically nothing, they were included on a lot of flights.

Japan has about 2600 unsheltered people in a country of 124 million. That’s 800 fewer than San Francisco, which has a population of 826,00. Japan’s numbers mask a much broader housing insecurity issue. But if you have shelter, you have a place to get high that isn’t the train. It’s that simple.

I’m ok with appropriating more money for security, but this is a good reminder that Congress gets to decide whether the Supreme Court gets electricity, let alone security. After the midterms, Democrats should condition any court funding on an enforceable ethics code. It would be wildly popular.

Counter-intuitive take to what most are saying. I actually enjoy being awake before the sun rises, so I see an 8am sunrise as a bonus. But in Seattle I’m sorta indifferent about the extra hour of daylight in the evening during winter. We get so little sunshine then, night and day feel the same.

Of all of this country’s nepotism problems, 4 month Senate appointments are one of the least problematic. The issue is when you try and insert a family member for long haul, which is what Lisa Murkowski’s father did and partly why he lost re-election to Sarah Palin. She survived, ironically, though.

The caveat to this is that sometimes people should run for high office as complete neophytes because nobody with more experience is willing to step up to fill a partisan or ideological lane that needs to be represented. This wasn’t the case in this race, though.

Run for city council, run for state assembly, learn how the system works and get vetted in a smaller race with lower stakes.
Fun fact about Marsha Blackburn is that decades before she made headlines for asking Kentanji Brown Jackson, "What is a woman," she notoriously insisted on being called "Congressman" back when she was in the House in order to not normalize terms that imply women are equals to men.

I spoke to my old friend Mitch McConnell this morning. We talked for 20 minutes about how he should stay in the hospital for the rest of his term so that there’s one less vote to confirm an Alito replacement.
On the one hand, this is Grade A trolling. On the other, the status quo is good because Republicans are one vote down in the Senate every day that Mitch isn’t dead. What would be wild is if he’s in a coma and Dems refuse to vote for expulsion. You need 2/3rds to do it.

All of it is prohibited, but the wearing of the uniform was an intentional choice, and a likely forfeit of both his career and freedom.

Supreme Court coverage doesn’t focus on plaintiffs, and I really want to express how much I respect Becky Pepper-Jackson. She could’ve had a much easier childhood by just switching to drama club or debate, but she fought an incredibly important battle instead. History will remember.
