A thing I remember about September 11, 2001, is that the Patriot Act, all 363 pages of massive changes in surveillance, intelligence, policing, immigration, national security, privacy, civil liberties... passed both houses of Congress & was signed into law w/in 45 days.

It would sure be nice to live in a society with functional widespread public transit. I need to get from suburban Maryland to suburban South Carolina w/o my car, so I can pick *up* a vehicle in SC and drive it back to MD. This turns out to be impossibly complicated, time-consuming, & and expensive.
We just had the wrap-up meeting for our emergency ad-hoc summer meals & snacks program. I’m in awe of the results: 3420 meals & hearty snacks served. $14,000 & hundreds of pounds of nonperishable food donated by the community, $7,000 spent on groceries & catering, $7,000 left to roll forward
Oh, my ❤️! My community is generous & caring. One of my branches in a high-poverty area has been a summer meals site for kids for years. We found out in April that our long-time meal provider was pulling out due to lack of funds, way too late to find another parter w/ the needed capacity by summer.
Well, crap. Just got off the phone with our vet, & all fears are confirmed. Alexander, bestest sweet tuxie boy, is full of cancer. There are no viable options that would even extend his time w/ any quality of life, so it’s just a matter of spoiling him rotten-er & watching for signs that it’s time.
A nice update: Magnolia has left her bank-robber past behind and is thriving in a loving furever home with her new tuxie sibling. wapo.st/4gmDv5W
A kitten was stolen and used in an attempted bank robbery. Then her luck changed.
“You can’t make this stuff up,” said Stephanie Stullich, whose nonprofit organization rescued the kitten. “Who would believe it?”

I dunno, man. She looks very sweet, but approximately 42% of cats are actually criminal masterminds. There’s a possibility Magnolia was behind the whole thing herself. What say you @darthbluesky.bsky.social? Innocent? Or is the “bank robber” just her patsy? www.dcnewsnow.com/news/local-n...
Just realized I have been harboring a mug in my desk cabinet that is neither dishwasher nor microwave safe? WTF why does this mug even exist? (I think it was part of a holiday gift or something?)
ALA is heartbroken at the passing of country music legend and literacy champion Dolly Parton. Her Imagination Library initiative, inspired by her father's inability to read or write, has put millions of books into children's hands and was considered by her to be among her greatest achievements.
My very sweet, submissive scruffmutt Oscar (RIP) either adored or hid from everyone he met, no in-between. One of only 2 people he ever GROWLED at instead was a friend's fiancé acting normal at a cookout. Some years later we all learned fiancé had been abusing friend (she left his sorry ass).
There's a reason that DJT doesn't have pets. There's a reason that you don't see him in pictures with animals. Animals don't like him. Sometimes the best judge of character is a dog or a cat or a horse. 🐎
Phew! Served 74 hungry kiddos at summer lunch today, & loaded them down with fruit & snacks to carry for later. The last cohort to eat volunteered to help clean up. They were quite little, so VERY enthusiastic but only marginally effective 😂. But I will never squelch that urge to help! #LibraryLife
Having a very normal day, chilling at the park with 160+ of my friends and a bunch of cool reptiles. Is it even summer reading season without a reptile show and a giant snake? #LibraryLife #SummerReading
Accessibility & adaptive tools & tech. Example: I have dysgraphia in my brain & nerve-damage in my hands, & my dad is dyslexic. Now accurate & easy voice-to-text and text-to-speech tools are literally in our pockets all the time- absolutely life-changing.
Air quality. I grew up in the Los Angeles basin in the 70s and 80s and remember having to stay inside because the smog was so bad - Stage 2 smog alerts, they were called. Apparently they haven't had one of those since 1988. Haven't had a stage one smog alert since 2003.
Garden kitten crop coming along nicely. They’re getting braver and more used to us; will eat with us nearby and clearly feel safe enough to relax on the deck. They’re all healthy & growing (still no luck finding help to get them trapped and fixed, but we’re working on it).
Out to dinner for my birthday… is it wrong that I want to put this napkin on my head and wear it as a hat?
B/c everything is stupid, I just emailed my doc to see if I should get a measles booster and/or antibody titer test. Folks my age probably only got 1 shot as a child (which wasn't always good enough), I work with young children & the public daily, & there are now active cases in the local area. 🤬
Now I'm extra sad that all my garden lettuce bolted in the heat wave. Bye, salads. Bye, lettuce on sandwiches. I'll miss you. 💩🪱🙅♀️

Man allegedly tries to rob Beltsville bank with stolen kitten
The nonprofit said that now that Magnolia’s “life of crime” is “behind her,” she is ready to find her forever home.

Reminders to self today: - Strangling people does solve many problems, but then you have different & usually worse problems. - Violence is rarely the answer, without a solid plan to dispose of the bodies. - I love my job, I love my job, I love my job, I love my job…
Sigh. Apparently I own almost every conceivable color of thread EXCEPT a neutral gray, and therefore I will not be hemming my nice new gray pants today. I am a thwarted short lady.
I’m proud of my colleagues. It’s going to be deadly hot here on Saturday & every public building is closed for July 4. The county administrator appealed to every agency to open a cooling center. Only the Library mustered enough staff willing to give up their holiday- 8 ppl volunteered w/in an hour.
Well… dammit. The neighborhood cat we call “Not-Alex” (b/c they’re such a perfect doppelgänger of our indoor-only cat Alex that we do double-takes & check that Alex is actually still indoors when we see Not-Alex outside) is, in fact, an “Alexis” w/ a whole litter of adorable kittens. On our deck.
Exciting times this #SummerReading Monday! 174 people came to our morning concert at one branch. Meanwhile, there's a tree-shaped hole in another branch, & a scramble to move books & equipment from below before it rains some more. And 1 more concert this afternoon! Wheee!
OH THANK DOG. The first half of the #SummerReading t-shirt order is ready & in my co-worker’s van. At 8am tomorrow everyone available will blitz the checking/counting/sorting/repacking and we’ll get them out to the branches by mid-day. Saturday is the first day to claim prizes. We’re gonna make it.
The screen-printing shop is trying to kill me. #SummerReading starts this week & our t-shirt order is still not ready. People here are RABID about their summer reading t-shirts. We are going to get MAULED if the shirts are not here by the time folks complete the 2nd challenge badge to earn shirts.
I'm at my desk, only person in this office at the moment, working away & vaguely aware of hearing someone walking around upstairs & banging on something. Then remembered this is a one-story building. Checked: no work trucks outside, & no one has accessed the door to the roof stairs. ?????

I’m eating steamed pork buns from the freezer for lunch, & I was really disappointed b/c I thought I‘d kept them too long and they were freezer-burnt. Then I realized I’d eaten the first one without peeling off the little paper square on the bottom. The second one tastes much better. 🤦♀️
