I add that devotees of Dionysos / Bacchus—some whom presented femininely—were also weaponised by Roman politicians. Philo of Alexandria called gender nonconforming queer people groomers & corruptors of youth; other Roman writers like Martial blamed socio-moral decay on underground queer communities.
