Affective practice in early sociolinguistic work: Labov's later reflection on danger of death narratives. "As I write about this now, or at any time that I tell others about it, I am overcome by a surge of emotion, generated by the report of the death of a woman I have never met." (Labov 2013: 82)

We had not talked much about his wife before. I remember asking a few questions about his grandchildren to recover a more cheerful tone for the end of the interview. When I was done, and ready to go, he said, “Come here a minute. I want to show you something.” He took me into a dining room with wood paneling, and several portraits hanging on the walls. He said, “That’s her. I just wanted you to see her.” As I write about this now, or at any time that I tell others about it, I am overcome by a surge of emotion, generated by the report of the death of a woman I have never met. It is not of course my emotion, but the feeling of the captain for that most important person in his life, which he was able to convey to me with a minimal use of language.

It's interesting to learn that in Old English, 'you' was only used for the plural. As for the ambiguity of 'you' as a singular, we’ve kind of found ways to work around it. One simple solution I’ve noticed is just adding the person’s name when addressing them directly, or even making eye contact.

This article reminds me of a recent discussion I had with participants on #CorpusMOOC: how labelling language uses like "ain't" and "isn't" as simply standard or non-standard risks reinforcing social discrimination, as choices like "ain't" are often linked to lower sociolinguistic groups.
