William H. Hays : Island Universe, 2013 Four-color reduction linoleum block print on 100% rag Stonehenge paper using oil-based archival inks. 23.5 × 31 cm | 9 × 12 in Private Collection.

Hays created this piece after a trip to Beach Meadows in Nova Scotia in 2013. During a clear evening shortly after his wife's passing, a friend took him to watch the Perseid meteor shower. The view included a bright Milky Way, calm waves lapping at the shore, and a small island just off the coast, which inspired both the visual composition and the title.

Open Window, Collioure (1905) helped define Fauvism’s new light. Matisse opened the shutters and painted the Mediterranean with vivid, liberated colour, turning the window into both subject and frame as inside and outside merge.
