I work in public policy for working families in rural western Washington State fighting for good economic policies that help us take care of our communities and the land. Lawyer. Port Angeles City Councilmember 2018 to 2025. Se estudia español.

A #WALeg Senator who is a real estate investor and financial advisor said tax credits for working families won't make a difference. I know a lot of people in his district who will benefit from this bill, because working families have to count every expense while his party cuts the safety net.

Opponents to the #WALeg Millionaires Tax are relying on 1930s interpretation of late 19th Century constitutional text. Here is the unofficial 1878 Washington State Constitution, which uses the phrase "class of subjects" in the sentence under debate. What is a "class of subjects"?

Image shows handwritten 1878 unofficial Washington State Constitution, showing the article on Finances, Article XII, Section 2, which reads "All taxes shall be uniform upon the same class of subjects within the territorial limits of the authority levying the tax; and shall be levied and collected under general laws, which shall prescribe such regulations as shall secure a just valuation for taxation of all property, real and personal."

The opposition to #TaxTheRich can't get it's talking points in order: AI tech bros threaten to move to "more attractive business climates [like] San Francisco," while the @wsj.com warns #WALeg is "putting their economy and jobs at risk if they follow the California [model]." So which is it? #1u

Text from a news article reads:

"Ferguson’s email came a day after a dozen leaders involved in artificial intelligence ventures sent the governor a letter, urging him to “pause” the income tax legislation and increase the state’s capital gains tax instead. They warned the income tax would stifle AI investment in the state, with companies lured instead to more attractive business climates in San Francisco and Texas.

"The Wall Street Journal editorial board seized on the letter, writing that it reflected “A Tech Tax Revolt Against Democrats.” In an editorial published yesterday afternoon, the board argued that Washington state “Democrats are putting their economy and jobs at risk if they follow the California ratchet of tax, spend, and tax some more.”"

"Tech workers aren't going to want to locate here" says Republican speaker. Famously, no tech worker has ever wanted to locate to California or New York or Massachusetts as well. #waleg

#WALeg is on the verge of making historic improvements for working families by making the ultra-rich pay what they owe so that we can have better public programs like healthcare, housing, childcare, education, and good jobs in every corner of #WashingtonState. #1u #WAforAll

The #WALeg House still has yet to vote on the Millionaires Tax! Our sources say that phone calls to lawmakers’ offices urging them to vote YES are what’s needed right now to keep the bill moving. We've made that easy by setting up a simple way to plug in your info and call them with one click:

In #WA, working people with the lowest incomes pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes than the wealthiest. That is an upside down tax system because the highest income earners have the most ability to pay what they truly owe so that we can have good public services like schools. #waleg

The image is a graph showing total taxes as a share of family income in Washington State. With bar graphs where the lowest 20% of incomes pay 13.8% of their income in taxes, and the top 1% of incomes (family income over $878,400 per year) pay only 4.1% of their income in taxes. This is labeled as a regressive tax system.
