Celebrations of Jackie Robinson Day downplay his activism during and after his playing career. They also ignore the fact that there are still so few Black major league players and managers, and no Black majority owners of any MLB team.

Funny that the Jays signed Patrick Corbin just to put a Vladimir-Lenyn infield behind him

Ready for the 9-1-1 challenge? 9 mini dogs 1 beer (split into 9 glasses) 1 full inning before the food gets too cold and the beer gets too warm

Turns out the 9-9-9 challenge box the Giants and five other MLB teams are selling this season is a bit of a rip-off. I know, a ballpark concession item isn't worth the price. I'm as shocked as you all are. www.sfgate.com/giants/artic...

So the concessions built into the law by gun advocates restored the shooter's access to firearms. It's really frustrating to see already that this glaring and completely predictable failure of the system will be lost in the coming discourse. www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/ar...

RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald says police had visited the shooter’s residence at various points over recent years. Officers had responded to mental-health related calls, and firearms had been seized.

“At a later point in time, the lawful owner of those firearms petitioned for those firearms to be returned, and they were.”

Trying to let the Tumbler Ridge news sink in. I used to work in the area. I was charmed by the town, the dinosaur museum, and people every time. Prayers are with families of the victims and the wonderful community in the Peace. I just want to hit those trying to make this tragedy fit their agenda

It will be interesting to see how teams handle this for minor leaguers, who will be living (some for the first time with limited English) in and around towns across rural, deeply Republican America.

*new* from me: As pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training, three front office staffers spoke to me about helping Latino baseball players and their families navigate an America ravaged by ICE raids. They say guidance from MLB has been “minimal” so their teams are getting creative.

Juneteenth is important because it reminds us that our rights mean very little on paper unless there is the willingness to stand against those who don't believe in those rights.

Not sure I've seen anyone point this out yet, but per @triumph.boggsmemorialleague.com, Major League Baseball scrubbed the word "diversity" from its former "diversity and inclusion" page sometime after December 14. Left is it via the Wayback machine on 12/14 right is now.

Two versions of MLB's "diversity" page. On the left the word "diversity" is included. On the right, the new version, the word "diversity" is scrubbed.

From what I understand of this, "woke" is when you disagree that the political and social status quo is a natural order.

new unhinged screed in The Chronicle just dropped www.chronicle.com/article/acad...

Over the last 10 years or so, a cultural revolution has been imposed on this country from the top down. Its ideas originated in the academy, and it’s been carried out of the academy by elite-educated activists and journalists and academics. (As has been said, we’re all on campus now.) Its agenda includes decriminalization or nonprosecution of property and drug crimes and, ultimately, the abolition of police and prisons; open borders, effectively if not explicitly; the suppression of speech that is judged to be harmful to disadvantaged groups; “affirmative” care for gender-dysphoric youth (puberty blockers followed by cross-sex hormones followed, in some cases, by mastectomies) and the inclusion of natal males in girls’ and women’s sports; and the replacement of equality by equity — of equal opportunity for individuals by equal outcomes for designated demographic groups — as the goal of social policy.

It insists that the state is evil, that the nuclear family is evil, that something called “whiteness” is evil, that the sex binary, which is core to human biology, is a social construct. It is responsible for the DEI regimes, the training and minders and guidelines, that have blighted American workplaces, including academic ones. It has promulgated an ever-shifting array of rebarbative neologisms whose purpose often seems to be no more than its own enforcement: POC (now BIPOC), AAPI (now AANHPI), LGBTQ (now LGBTQIA2S+), “pregnant people,” “menstruators,” “front hole,” “chest feeding,” and, yes, “Latinx.” It is joyless, vengeful, and tyrannical. It is purist and totalistic. It demands affirmative, continuous, and enthusiastic consent.

The more I talk to people in my life who call themselves "conservative", the more I realize they are more left-leaning in their personal views, but just like the idea of wearing the "conservative" label.
