Midwestern nerd, weird animal person, dad. Smarter than the toughies, tougher than the smarties. he/him

Seen at the supermarket. At first glance Grogu seems like an odd choice to put on shaving products, but think about it: he’s 50 years old and male, but his face is smooth and hairless.

A package containing green disposable razors with an image of the Star Wars Cinematic Universe character Grogu embossed on the handle. The package bears a color image of the little goober, who is basically an infant version of whatever Yoda is: small, green, with beady black eyes and large horizontal ears.

I wonder if this is like firearm ownership, where a small minority have 50 guns each that make the per capita numbers weird. Does everyone but me care about betting on sports, or are there like 10 million people with a real serious problem? fortune.com/2026/07/26/g...

Gambling becomes America's favorite pastime as Americans spend more on sports bets than movies, arts, museums, and music combined | Fortune

Americans wagered $166 billion on sports last year, more than Hollywood, the music industry, books, and museums combined.

Just finished @elizmanderson.com’s Lord of the Wood. I came in expecting a queer fantasy romance, which it is, but the author’s notes describe it as horror, which is also fair since the relationships happen in and around an enchanted forest that kills people. I enjoyed it, a really good read!

Question for dogs: You ever go out into the yard and forget what you went out there for? And it really doesn’t help when Tall Friend keeps making impatient noises and looking at that thing on his wrist.

Happy to hear the old Bell Federal Savings Weather Bell at Clark and Monroe is being rehabbed and relit. It’s a big bell with neon tubes that would change color based on upcoming weather, and would flash side to side as if swinging when rain or snow is coming. chicago.suntimes.com/architecture...

Iconic Loop weather bell to shine again after years in the dark

"It's an icon for the city," said Gary Stoltz of R2 Companies, which is redeveloping the Rector Building where the sign is located. "Everybody who's spent time in the Loop, walking through the Loop, r...

I took Giant Dog for a nice long walk through the forest preserve, and it’s striking that no matter how much she’s trudging and panting at the end of a walk, as soon as we’re back and she’s in the backyard with smol dog, it’s time for zoomies!

From an article on Gen Xers approaching retirement: “When thoroughbreds come off the track, they don't get put out to pasture... They find new ground: dressage, jumping, trail riding.” Trainer: “Okay, from now on you’re going to be jumping over things.” Retired Racehorse: “Fuck you.”

Workhorse or Thoroughbred?
What Gen X became, over four decades of figuring it out, isn't a workhorse, it's a thoroughbred. When thoroughbreds come off the track, they don't get put out to pasture; they're too valuable.
They find new ground: dressage, jumping, trail riding. Same horse. Same fire. Different course. But even thoroughbreds need trainers.

A photo from an indoor air quality monitor listing on Amazon. I can see how knowing their air quality would be helpful for these people but I feel like they might have more pressing issues to deal with right now.

An image of a young couple holding each other and looking with distress out a picture window, through which it can be seen that the entire surrounding area appears to be engulfed in flames. An air quality monitor is on a table near them, indicating that the air quality is in the “Unhealthy” category with a little red frowny face. You can’t make this out from the photo, but there is a tiny line of text above the frowny face advising them to “open windows to improve air circulation”.

I don’t know how anyone is supposed to identify if a signature is forged, since almost every time I sign anything anymore it’s with my index finger on an awkwardly held tablet.

Congratulations to Spain for winning the World Cup, and also to the lady who cut my hair today who spent the whole time telling me about some beef she has with the Argentinan national football team for reasons I didn’t really follow, but I’ve got to imagine she’s pretty happy Spain won.
