The "moral" code at the center of US politics and economics is survival of the fittest, where the strong eat the weak. The best evidence for this is all the times we reward or forgive abusers and punish or abandon their victims. It's the moral code that has to change.

I grew up watching Star Trek: The Next Generation, and one of the qualities I loved most about it was that it felt universal and uniting, like it was truly made for everyone. Multiple views could come together under the umbrellas of reason and compassion, and diversity was normal.

We are built to live each day in the warmth of community, with friends and family and fellow villagers and a small, familiar social world that supports us. If you feel the pain of our chronic absence of community, congratulations... you are a human.
