Toad in the hole, with fat herby butcher’s sausages, and onion gravy made with last year’s sloe gin. Autumn is here 😋

I am not a Woman Who Runs with the Wolves, I am a Writer Who Naps with Her Cat.
Enjoying the new season of ‘Bookish’ - clever and twisty, and stuffed full of classic crime homage.
🥵 Well, those were NOT ’mild, fruity’ chillies, as promised on the label. It made for a very nice prawn pathia, but I seem to have gone slightly deaf.
Every writer feeling personally attacked right now… (Tag yourself, I’m Brainstorm…)
Rough Draft vs Final Draft
Cannot post a pic for Ginger Cat Appreciation Day, since said Ginger Cat is prowling in the garden, seeking whom she may devour 🙄
Getting an early start on autumn - trusty standby dish, duck, sweet potato mash, braised red cabbage
Well, this morning’s mouse was only shamming dead. So that was fun for everybody. I didn’t know I could hit that high note. Or that my hand-eye coordination would let me (re)grab a mouse in midair. I don’t think it’s in the best of health, but it’s outside and not in the cat’s gob.
Well, here’s a blast from the past. No, it isn’t a misshapen musical instrument - Mum turned out a cupboard and found my old fencing kit. I doubt the breeches fit any more, but the foils are fine.
Fried sardines with caponata for tea - husband deeply unsure about aubergine and celery. Opened up my manuscript today for the first time in months (Dad’s illness then passing has been tough) - didn’t do much, but it’s something.
Just chased the cat and her very lively loud ‘gift’ back out into the garden - couldn’t get it away from her in time, but it’ll have a better chance outside than under the cupboard. Age is not slowing her down, murderous furry horror.
Sardines on toast should not take an hour to make, no matter how fancy the topping! They better be tasty. (Parmesan, capers, anchovies, lemon, chili, garlic- and a cucumber fennel salad)
Big window over our landing stairs perfectly framing the eclipse - we are watching with chilled Prosecco and maximum fans. 😁
Spotless skies for days, and now… clouds, an hour before eclipse. Bloody typical. 🙄
Black garlic and pomegranate lamb, bulgar salad with sumac and barberries
Meat-free experiment - spicy beetroot and goats cheese with crispy sweet gem lettuce, roasted red onion and sweet potato, walnuts and balsamic dressing
Of course, reading a new book requires being able to actually retrieve said book. There is unfortunately snoring. And possessive claws.

Hot honey salmon rice bowl. (Husband has just found the hot honey, by the sound of it)
Is there any way to make courgette palatable? I find it either bland or bitter in the recipes I’ve tried. 🤷🏼♀️
There is a mouse Somewhere in the bedroom. Cat has become bored with it refusing to come out to play and has gone to find another one. I have shut the door and left windows open. It is too hot for this.
My father passed away this morning. Not a shock, in some ways, but everything is a bit surreal right now.
Less Cat on A Hot Tin Roof, more Cat on a Cool Tile Floor. She is so warm, poor sausage.
Small shower here, and my cat is sitting on the garden path with her face turned up, letting the rain ping off her whiskers. Bliss. It’s no fun having a thick fur coat in thus weather.
Well, it’s confirmed - my Dad is going into end of life nursing care. F*ck cancer.
It’s so hot, all the prosecco in my glass seems to have evaporated… 🥴
