Historian, professor, friend of sweet pitbulls and cats. Wrote a book about the Rhinelander trial (1925) a while back for UNC Press. Recent work on Urban League and equality 1960s/early 70s. I sew, knit, and read historical mysteries.

Let’s hear it for having to use Canvas! Teaching an online course this semester and it’s the only way to do it. Nothing like seeing this when I logged on especially since it’s finals week. Fall 26 only teaching in person will avoid Canvas and back to unhackable paper!

Shiny hunters announcing hacked Instructure’s Canvas LLM for a second time.

Great news about this resource from the amazing Library of Congress! Great to use in the undergraduate history classroom. During the pandemic my intro history students searched Chronicling America to see what local newspapers said-or not-about the 1918 pandemic. They enjoyed finding the old stories.

Teaching first half US History intro survey this semester and covering 1850 Fugitive Slave Act and efforts like this to rescue people who freed themselves. Asking students to imagine being alive then and considering what can you/could you/should you do? Tubman knew the answer.

It’s for pieces like this from Will Bunch that I subscribe to the Inquirer although Phillie is at least a 5 hour drive away. He reminds us of the moral issues at stake right now. You won’t find anything like it in the other “national” newspapers which I no longer subscribe to.

There's a reason ICE agents wear masks in the street. From Kristi Noem's war-crime propaganda to the airport officers harassing innocent tourists, the MAGA deportation regime is not just immoral but increasingly criminal Someday, there must be justice. Today’s double sided poster for Hands Off protests. Attended 2 today! One in our county seat and the other in my small Ohio city. Good turnout for both! People are angry about the cuts to the federal government, DOGE, and the Trump tariffs.

Poster with large text Hands Off. underneath terms like Medicaid, social security. Bottom line of text is Elon back to S. Africa.Poster with text stating, No Kings, No Monarch, No Police State

As a history professor at an Ohio public uni all I can say is that this is awful. Not surprised Rep legislature and governor just union busted faculty unions plus going to make it more difficult to teach history accurately. As the immortal Ohioan Christie Hynde once sang, “hey, ho, way to go Ohio!”

Mike DeWine just ended academic freedom at Ohio public colleges and universities. He just signed the most restrictive higher ed bill in modern American history.

If you’re an Ohioan please reach out to Gov. DeWine and ask him to veto SB1 when it reaches his desk. It’s an absurd bill that will decrease the quality/value of public higher ed in Ohio and it also hurts faculty unions. Why is Ohio on a race to the bottom?

Life in a gerrymandered state. Despite overwhelming opposition legislature is about to gut public higher ed. Bill is all about union busting and controlling faculty and student speech under the guise of “intellectual diversity.” Why would young people stay in Ohio? newrepublic.com/article/1924...

Conservative lawmakers in the Buckeye State are pushing a bill that could create a devastating statewide brain drain.

Opinion Senate Bill 1 is a disaster Its thinly veiled efforts to promote political neutrality & “intellectual diversity” in public universities are nothing but a trojan horse to push their own political agenda & neuter discussions that scare them by Zach Donaldson www.dispatch.com/story/opinio...
