Above all though, Harry Kane. A genuinely world-class footballer. Always pops up clutch. Takes responsibility in the toughest moments. The finish for his 2nd goal was outrageous.
Gordon and Saka made SUCH a difference when they came on. Better delivery, beating their men 1v1, hitting the byline. Genuinely didn’t see the comeback @ ~60mins.
Jheeeze, what a half. Ugh. What a time to drop a 0/10 performance, prior to the “hydration break”. Defensive structure was so bad for DRC’s goal. But that being said, England have still created a lot of good chances. Bellingham has to take one of his headers. Simple as.
Mexico will be horrible R16 opponents for England (if they beat DR Congo today). The intensity they played with last night. The noise their (home) fans will generate at the Azteca. The altitude in Mexico City. Eeesh. V v tricky.
Quick thoughts. Coming back from the game: - Bellingham made it happen (again, for England). So much better as an #8, IMO. Some of his tackles late in the 1st half, set the tempo. - RB situation is a disaster; Quansah injury. - Anderson probs our best player today. Everywhere.

Wharton’s performance last night is yet another reminder that Tuchel taking Henderson to the WC over him is a scandalous call. Wharton clearly wasn’t fully fit. But his ball progression & line-breaking passes are invaluable. Particularly in a squad that lacks creativity.

It’s a tough one, but I think overall, this is positive and what Phil needs tbh. He’s got his spark and joy back a bit. In this final stretch of the season. And I think a (enforced) summer reset is probably for the best.
