Jesus spoke more about His return than many people realize. Almost all of His teaching on it is found in the final weeks of His ministry, especially in what is called the Olivet Discourse - Matthew 24-25, Mark 13, and Luke 21 - plus promises in John's Gospel.

The Text Foundation Matthew 24:30-31, 42-44 - "Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven... and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call... Therefore, keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come... So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."

1. His Return is Certain Jesus never presented His return as a possibility, but as a promise. • John 14:2-3 - "I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go... I will come again and will take you to myself."

• Matthew 26:64 - Before the high priest He said, "From now on you will see the Son of Man... coming on the clouds of heaven." This is the anchor of the sermon: Christians are not waiting for an idea, but for a Person.

2. The Timing is Unknown - So Don't Set Dates This is Jesus' strongest warning. • Matthew 24:36 - "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

• Matthew 24:37-39 - It will be like the days of Noah - life going on as normal, then sudden.

He deliberately took date-setting off the table to keep us focused on readiness, not calculation. 3. There Will Be Signs, But They Are Not the Focus In Matthew 24:4-14 and Luke 21:8-28 Jesus lists: • Deception - false messiahs claiming "I am He"

Upheaval - wars, famines, earthquakes • Persecution of believers and a cooling of love • The gospel preached to the whole world - Matthew 24:14 He says these are "the beginning of birth pains" - they tell us the world is groaning toward redemption, but they are not a countdown clock.

4. The Purpose of His Return is Twofold: Gathering and Judgment Jesus was clear it will be public, powerful, and personal. • Gathering His people: Mark 13:26-27 - He will send angels to gather His elect from the ends of the earth.

Judgment with justice: Matthew 25:31-46 - The parable of the Sheep and the Goats. When He returns as King, He will separate people not by religious talk, but by real heart-transformation shown in how we treated "the least of these."

5. How We Should Live Until Then - The Heart of His Sermon This is where Jesus spent most of His time. He told 5 parables back-to-back to answer one question: "What does it mean to be ready?"

a) Be Watchful - Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13) Five had oil, five didn't. All were waiting, but only half were prepared to wait long. Readiness is an inward reality - keeping intimacy with Christ alive - not just outward association.

b) Be Faithful at Work - Parable of the Faithful Servant (Matthew 24:45-51) and The Talents (Matthew 25:14-30) The faithful servant is found doing his master's work. The master doesn't reward laziness that says "my master delays." He rewards faithfulness with what we've been given -

c) Be Loving in Action - Sheep and Goats (Matthew 25:31-46) True readiness shows up in compassion - feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, visiting the sick and in prison.

d) Live Without Fear - Luke 21:28 "When these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." For the believer, His return is not a threat, it is hope. A Simple Sermon Outline You Can Use: Title: Ready When He Comes

Introduction: Everyone lives for something that's coming - a wedding, graduation, retirement. Jesus says history itself is moving toward one event: His return. Point 1: He IS Coming Back (John 14:3) We can bank our lives on it.

Point 2: We DON'T Know When (Matt 24:36, 44) So we stop predicting and start preparing. Point 3: We MUST Be Ready (Matt 24:42) Readiness = Watchful heart (Virgins), Faithful hands (Talents), Loving life (Sheep & Goats).

Conclusion: Jesus illustrated it as a thief in the night (Matt 24:43) - not to scare us, but because a thief comes unexpectedly. A friend comes unexpectedly too - and you want to be ready for a friend.

1. Faith from distant lands like Sheba/Ethiopia will be honored at Judgment. 2. The Gospel is for Ethiopians equally - it must go to the ends of the earth. The Ethiopian eunuch story in Acts 8 is seen as proof that Jesus meant what He said.
